Если удалось прочитать /BUILD_VERSION:
  -> My build version is set to be {1.1}.
Если удалось прочитать /.git/HEAD:
  Если там SHA - взять.
  Если там ссылка на другой файл - прочитать его (например, "ref: refs/heads/master").
  Если там нет - взять из .git/packed-refs
  -> My head commit is {4673fa7}.
Если ничего не удалось:
  -> Sorry, I don't know.

А ещё можно просто читать package.json. Для продакшена этого хватит.
