This is another zone "ownership" question that I stumbled upon doing testing (I'm not looking for this stuff, really!! :) ) Hopefully I can explain this well enough - prompt me to clarify if not! Limiting this to the AN area, the API defines a number of offshore (20 or 25 to 40 nm) marine zones that are assigned to the nearest office on the east coast: ANZ27X (BOX) Two things about this:
Other related information: On the map at www.weather.gov, the 20-40nm zones appear, and clicking on any of these ANZX7X zones takes you to the page for the nearest office (e.g., BOX for the 27X zones). So that seems to agree with the office definitions on the API that the office would issue alerts for those zones. Soooo... I guess my questions are: What's the deal with the 20-40nm zones? Do they really exist or are they actually a part of the adjacent further-offshore zones as the ANZ8XX polygons suggest? Do the offices actually have the responsibility for the zones (and should they be issuing alerts) or should they be removed from the zone lists for those offices? Thanks! |

I believe this might be unique to Eastern Region offices. Those zones are for the local offices between 20-40nm, but as I understand it does not cover all responsibilities and is only for issuance of Special Marine Warnings. I see a special marine warning alert for ANZ678 in API from 8/13. The ER WFO coastal zones from South Carolina north in the 20-40nm range also overlap with offshore zones where OPC has responsibility. At the moment offshore zone products do not show up as alerts in API. This map shows all of the zones: https://www.arcgis.com/apps/mapviewer/index.html?url=https://mapservices.weather.noaa.gov/static/rest/services/nws_reference_maps/nws_reference_map/MapServer |
