Rather than hardcoded color constants corresponding to different user interface backgrounds, could nine-patch textures be used? Textures are in line with the vanilla user interface customization philosophy and would allow better customization using a texture pack.

Sounds like a good idea.
I'll probably get around to adding support for this when I have more energy to work on Limelight.
I'll probably still keep colors, though, since I want to add custom themes configurable via configs, and having to create a single-pixel texture every time you want to change the color would be kind of dumb.
