People and Organizations
There are a variety of information systems that generate unique identifiers for people and organizations on the web. These entities mentioned in the TEI should be divided into two categories: people, organizations, and families/dynasties (a subcategory of organization) related to the subject material of the coins (or other numismatic objects) and entities related to modern numismatic scholarship--other ANS members, scholars, etc.
Nomisma.org should be the preferred system for these entities as they pertain to numismatic objects (e.g., Augustus, Holy Roman Empire). If there are significant people/organization subject matter that hasn't been created in Nomisma, please inform me so that I can create those entities.
The ANS Biographies should be the preferred system to link to scholars related in some way to content in the ANS Archives. There are only about 140 entities currently in this system.
The browse page includes a keyword search. Searching for last name should yield a result. Since the list is limited, I can provide a list of names in the system.
The Virtual International Authority File is an authority system that aggregates the people and organization identifiers from many of the major national libraries. These people are often associated with the authoring/editing of books, or are subject matter of books. Some ancient or medieval people may have identifiers in VIAF due to the catalog of the German National Library, but VIAF consists primarily of people who have lived in the last several hundred years. There is a search bar on the home page. Virtually every numismatic scholar of the last 200 years should have an ID in VIAF.
The VIAF URI is listed as the "permalink" at the top of a page. The form of the URI is http://viaf.org/viaf/28124686
You will probably not need to use the Gettty Union List of Artist Names, as entities should be generated in Nomisma, where lacking. However, the Getty offers a number of vocabularies as Linked Open Data. The search is available at http://vocab.getty.edu/. You can select "ULAN" from the drop down menu and supply a keyword search. The URI pattern is http://vocab.getty.edu/ulan/500013694.
