Updates the base adapter class to send timing metrics for each of its main functions that drive the pipeline (extract, transform, etc).
I've tried a technique to hide away the details of the metrics tracking code. It's slightly more complicated but should keep the main functions readable. I'm hoping to repeat this pattern elsewhere.
