SNOLF: TOURNAMENT EDITION v0.1

It's back, and better than ever!
That's right! SNOLF: The Sonic Golf Experience has been remastered and brought into the 2020 age with SNOLF: TOURNAMENT EDITION!

Take control of SNOLF, the "Coolest Golf Ball", and snolf your way to victory with golf-like controls! No running and jumping for you - it's full-on bouncy ball action all the way!

FEATURES:

  • Exhilirating (frustrating?) golf-style gameplay!
  • Three shot types: Putter, Regular, and Driver! Control your bounce!
  • Infinite lives!
  • Stuck? Use Shot Reset to go back to your last position!
    • Really, really stuck? Use Death Reset and take another try without restarting your console!
  • UP TO FOUR PLAYER HOTSEAT MULTIPLAYER!
    • That's right! One controller, two-to-four times the fun!
    • Struggle together in Cooperative mode, or go head-to-head in a Competitive Showdown!
  • Don't have time for the full game? That's OK! Game Length options let you play only Act 1 stages or only Act 2 stages!
  • All-new updated graphics. Feel the blast processing!

SNOLF INSTRUCTIONS:

Press A, B, or C to begin your shot. The button you press will determine the shot type:

  • Button A: Putter. This shot type can't shoot you very far, but you'll have minimal bouncing. Great for tricky shots.
  • Button B: Regular. Your standard 9-Iron shot. You'll bounce off of walls in this mode, but still have soft landings.
  • Button C: Driver. Shoot for the stars! This shot type has a fast meter, but will allow you to bounce along the ground. Go the distance!

Once you have begun a shot, the power meter ring will be displayed and begin moving.
Press the button again to lock in your horizontal velocity, and the display will switch to show your vertical velocity.
Press the button a third time to lock in the vertical velocity, and launch your Snolf ball!

You can use the D-Pad to slow yourself when rolling, or to change which way your shot will initially face.

If you are rolling into a bad position, hold the A button for 1.5 seconds to reset your shot.
If you're really, really, stuck, press Start and then the A button to kill your Snolf ball and try again.

It's simple!

SNOLF v0.4: Completable

Merry Snolfmas!! SNOLF: The Sonic Golf Experience is now at version 0.4, which brings with it significant bugfixes; Sonic will now behave correctly in zone-end sequences! This includes the end of Sky Chase Zone, and the jump-onto-rocket-ship cutscene of Wing Fortress Zone.

Altogether, with the more robust reset button logic from v0.3, this means that SNOLF is fully completable!

There are still more tweaks and fixes to come, but if you've been waiting for a somewhat stable version, this it!

NOTE: More quality of life features in SNOLF v0.5!! https://github.com/DrMelon/s2disasm/releases/tag/v0.5

Snolf v0.3 Pre-release
Pre-release

Bugfix release: the Sonic_GolfMeter subroutine wasn't running reliably, given that it was wedged inside Obj01_MdRoll - so it was only running when Sonic was classed as "rolling", so in any condition where Sonic's routine/mode was changing rapidly, it was impossible to use the reset function. It has been moved outside the routine logic, so it always runs.

Additionally, Sonic bounces off of walls horizontally in the air; this helps players make ricochet shots to get out of tight areas, like the vertical shafts in Hilltop and in Metropolis, and aids with fighting the Casino Night Act 2 boss. Happy snolfin'!

*NOTE: SNOLF v0.3 has been deprecated, and many bugs were fixed in SNOLF v0.4: https://github.com/DrMelon/s2disasm/releases/tag/v0.4 *

Snolf v0.2 Pre-release
Pre-release

SNOLF: The Sonic Golf Experience has been updated with some Quality of Life features!
After some extensive feedback, here is SNOLF v0.2;

  • Stopped using global timer for shot-strength meters; they now reset upon each shot.
  • Added the ability to choose the initial shot meter direction - press left or right to face left or right before entering shot mode.
  • Added a new reset ability that teleports you back to your last launch position; just hold A, B, or C, when you are stuck.

NOTE: SNOLF v0.2 has been deprecated! Bugs have been fixed and the experience improved in SNOLF v0.3: https://github.com/DrMelon/s2disasm/releases/tag/v0.3

Snolf v0.1 Pre-release
Pre-release

The very first version of SNOLF: The Sonic Golf Experience!
This romhack replaces Sonic's ability to move with a golf-game mechanic, similar to the kind of thing found in games like Kirby's Dream Course. Sonic remains rolled up into a ball under most conditions, and can only be launched when he has come to a stop. The Rings counter instead counts how many shots you have taken, allowing players to compete to get the lowest score! (In future, the Zones will have Par values, and will award the player points based on their over/under).

When Sonic is at rest, press A, B, or C to begin your golf swing. A ring sprite will move left to right; how far left and right the sprite is determines the force that Sonic will be hit with, and the direction that he will move in. Press the button again to lock-in the horizontal force. You will then be presented with a similar display that controls how much vertical force Sonic will be hit with. Pressing the button in this state will lock-in the vertical force, and launch Sonic! Good luck!

Note: if you get stuck between two ramps or something like that, you can still use the d-pad to slow Sonic down while he's rolling!

Many thanks to the many, many fine folks who have been romhacking all these years. Thank you for making this so much easier than it used to be!

EDIT: SNOLF v0.1 has been deprecated! There are substantial quality of life features in SNOLF v0.2: https://github.com/DrMelon/s2disasm/releases/tag/v0.2
