The neo-Riemannian theory is a loose collection of research focused on understanding the triad and its transformative properties.

Transformations

LPR transformations are a set of pre-defined rules describing the manner in which a triad may be transformed. Each transformation works along a particular chord factor determined by the objects current classification. When dealing with major and minor triads, the interval between the root and the third factors may be used to detect how the transformation should be applied.

Leading (L)

Parallel (P)

The parallel transformation works along the third factor of the triad, either incrementing or decrementing the note by a semitone depending upon the objects current classification.

Relative (R)
