@kburns, I merged the changes you did in dedalus branch.
Could you modify the dedalus script in this branch so that initial condition is simply q = randn(nx, ny)? Then remove all filter etc.

I also added normal Laplacian viscosity with coefficient nu=1.e-4 in all scripts. But as @kburns raised in #3, a fixed nu value won't work any resolution...
