CodeCapy Review ₍ᐢ•(ܫ)•ᐢ₎
Codebase SummaryZapDev is an AI-powered development platform that lets users create and iterate on web applications by interacting with AI agents in real-time sandboxes. The platform features a split-pane interface for live code preview and file exploration, and it now leverages a streaming‐first architecture using Server-Sent Events (SSE) to deliver real-time code generation responses. The PR updates API routes (such as /api/generate-ai-code-stream and /api/apply-ai-code-stream) to stream code generation, refines the conversation state management, updates the agent workflow and documentation (including AGENTS.md, AGENT_WORKFLOW.md, and ARCHITECTURE_ANALYSIS.md), and adjusts provider and sandbox integration logic. PR ChangesThe pull request introduces significant changes to the core AI code generation workflow. Key modifications include: Setup Instructions
Generated Test Cases1: Real-Time Code Generation Streaming Test ❗️❗️❗️Description: Tests the full user journey when initiating a code generation request. It verifies that upon sending a message, the system streams progress updates (status, file creation events, component events) via SSE. This confirms the new streaming-first architecture in the user interface. Prerequisites:
Steps:
Expected Result: The user sees a live stream of updates (status, file-progress, component events) in the chat window. The final message should indicate that the code generation is complete, and the generated code is accessible in the file explorer and live preview. 2: Edit Mode Streaming Test ❗️❗️❗️Description: Tests the edit mode workflow where the user requests a modification to an existing file. This verifies that the system respects the recently created files from conversation state and streams targeted edits with a modified system prompt, ensuring only specified files are updated. Prerequisites:
Steps:
Expected Result: The system streams an edit-specific response via SSE, and only the targeted file is modified. The conversation history should reflect the update with a record of edited files. No new file (such as App.jsx) is recreated if not specified. 3: Live Preview Update Test ❗️❗️Description: Tests the integration between the code generation/update process and the live preview iframe in the application. This ensures that once code is generated or updated, the sandbox is running and the live preview displays the updated app. Prerequisites:
Steps:
Expected Result: The live preview iframe displays the newly generated or updated application without errors, reflecting the changes made via the streaming code generation process. 4: File Explorer Update and Syntax Highlighting Test ❗️❗️Description: Tests that files generated via the streaming API are properly displayed in the file explorer with correct syntax highlighting and file structure. This confirms that the file manifest and caching mechanisms work as intended. Prerequisites:
Steps:
Expected Result: The file explorer displays a correct hierarchical tree of files and directories with syntax highlighting consistent with the file types, and the content of each file is displayed completely. 5: Error Handling and Truncation Recovery Test ❗️❗️Description: Tests that the system appropriately handles errors during streaming, such as truncated AI responses. It verifies that error events are streamed and the user is notified of any issues, and that the system provides an option for focused completion request. Prerequisites:
Steps:
Expected Result: The user sees error or warning SSE events with messages about truncated file content. The final complete event includes an error report and suggests recovery or focused completion. The UI should display the error message appropriately to the user. Raw Changes AnalyzedFile: AGENTS.md

Use of externally-controlled format string High

AI about 2 months ago
In general, to fix externally-controlled format string issues, avoid placing untrusted data inside the format string (the first string argument to functions like console.log, console.error, or util.format). Instead, pass untrusted data as separate arguments, or ensure it is safely escaped/sanitized or interpolated into a non-formatting context.
For this specific case, the best fix is to keep the first argument to console.error as a constant string without any interpolation, and pass sandboxId as a separate argument. That way, even if sandboxId contains % characters, they will be rendered as part of a value argument rather than interpreted as format specifiers. Concretely, on line 347 we should change:
console.error(`[apply-ai-code-stream] Failed to connect to sandbox ${sandboxId}:`, error);to:
console.error('[apply-ai-code-stream] Failed to connect to sandbox %s:', sandboxId, error);or alternatively:
console.error('[apply-ai-code-stream] Failed to connect to sandbox:', sandboxId, error);Both avoid using untrusted data in the format string. The %s version keeps the idea of explicit formatting; the second version simply uses standard console argument joining. Either preserves existing functionality (logging the sandbox ID and the error) while removing the vulnerability. No new imports or helper methods are required; this is a single-line change within src/app/api/apply-ai-code-stream/route.ts.

Fix provider selection in analyze-edit-intent
The analyze-edit-intent endpoint destructures provider and modelName from getProviderAndModel and then calls generateObject({ model: provider(modelName), ... }), but getProviderAndModel returns a model object rather than a provider factory or name (see src/lib/streaming/ai-provider.ts lines 164-204). As a result, provider is undefined and provider(modelName) throws on every request, so the endpoint will 500 before generating any search plan.

Wrong destructuring causes undefined function call error
The getProviderAndModel function returns an object with model, config, and boolean provider flags, but this code incorrectly destructures { provider, modelName } from it. Both provider and modelName will be undefined, causing provider(modelName) on line 199 to throw a TypeError: provider is not a function. The correct destructuring should be const { model: modelInstance } = getProviderAndModel(model) and then use modelInstance directly as the model parameter.

| const provider = getGroqProvider(); | ||

There was a problem hiding this comment.
Groq model ID prefix not stripped unlike other providers
For Groq models, the code passes the full modelId (e.g., groq/llama-3.3-70b) directly to the provider, unlike Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google providers which strip their prefixes using .replace(). This inconsistency means the Groq API receives model names like groq/llama-3.3-70b instead of the expected format like llama-3.3-70b-versatile, causing all Groq API calls to fail with an invalid model error.
Pull Request Review: Streaming-First AI Codegen ImplementationThis PR introduces a significant architectural shift from Inngest-based background jobs to a streaming-first approach using Server-Sent Events (SSE) with multi-model AI support. Critical Issues Found1. Global State Management (BLOCKING)Files: generate-ai-code-stream/route.ts:37-42, apply-ai-code-stream/route.ts:32-45 The use of global variables (conversationState, activeSandbox, existingFiles) is a critical production bug:
Required Fix: Use Redis/Upstash or Convex for user-scoped state management. 2. Missing Authentication (BLOCKING)All new API routes lack authentication checks. Anyone can call these endpoints and consume AI/E2B credits. Required: Add auth middleware with Stack Auth or Clerk. 3. No Input Validation (BLOCKING)Request bodies are not validated. Missing checks for prompt length, model IDs, project ownership. Required: Add Zod schema validation for all inputs. 4. Missing Rate Limiting (BLOCKING)No rate limiting on API routes. Could be abused to exhaust credits. Required: Implement Upstash rate limiting or Convex usage checks. 5. No Convex Integration (HIGH PRIORITY)New streaming routes don't integrate with existing Convex database:

346-418: Consider movinganalyzeUserPreferencesto a utilities file.While it's acceptable to have the function co-located with its types, placing runtime logic in a

116-167: Consider whether exposingwriteris necessary.Line 165 exposes the raw
WritableStreamDefaultWriterin the return object. This could allow callers to bypass the helper methods (sendProgress,sendKeepAlive,close) and corrupt the stream with incorrectly formatted SSE data.If the writer isn't needed by callers, consider removing it from the return object:
return { stream: stream.readable, sendProgress, sendKeepAlive, close, - writer, };If it is needed for advanced use cases, document the risks and proper usage patterns in the JSDoc comment.

open-lovable (1)
1-1: Verify this architectural migration is intentional and documented.This submodule pointer update is part of a broader migration from Inngest-based orchestration to a streaming-first, API-driven architecture. However, the established codebase learnings explicitly recommend using Inngest for background job orchestration and AI agent workflows (referencing Inngest 3.44 with
code-agent/runfunction and auto-fix retry logic).Before merging, please confirm:
- Is this migration intentional and a deliberate architectural decision?
- Are the previous Inngest-based learnings being formally deprecated?
- Is there migration documentation for existing Inngest workflows?
- Have all impacted services and workflows been audited for the orchestration layer change?
Additionally, submodule updates should include context about what changed in the upstream repository. Consider including a summary of the changes in the
open-lovablesubmodule in the PR description to aid in review.explanations/OPEN_LOVABLE_QUICK_REFERENCE.md (1)
1-258: Excellent quick reference documentation.This file is properly placed in the
explanations/folder and provides valuable, well-structured reference material for the Open-Lovable architecture. The code examples are clear, the organization is logical, and the content will be useful for implementation.AGENT_WORKFLOW.md (1)
1-216: Verify alignment with existing Inngest-based architecture.The workflow diagrams document a streaming-first, API-route-based architecture that appears to differ from the existing Inngest-based agent orchestration. Retrieved learnings indicate: "Implement message flow: User input → Convex
messagestable → Inngestcode-agent/run→ Code generation →fragmentstable."This PR introduces a new flow: User → API routes (generate-ai-code-stream, apply-ai-code-stream) → SSE streaming → Sandbox, which bypasses Inngest entirely. Please confirm this architectural shift is intentional and aligns with project goals.
Based on learnings: "Use Inngest for background job orchestration and AI agent workflows"
explanations/OPEN_LOVABLE_INDEX.md (1)
1-303: Well-structured navigation documentation.This index file is properly placed in the
explanations/folder and provides excellent navigation for the Open-Lovable documentation suite. The learning paths for different time commitments (5-min, 30-min, 60-min) and role-based guidance are particularly helpful.explanations/OPEN_LOVABLE_ARCHITECTURE_ANALYSIS.md (1)
1-1039: Exceptional architectural documentation.This comprehensive 1,039-line analysis is properly placed in the
explanations/folder and provides outstanding detail on the Open-Lovable architecture. The 11 sections cover all major aspects (generation flow, API routes, streaming, state management, AI integration, etc.) with clear examples and implementation guidance. This will be an invaluable resource for porting features to Zapdev.src/app/api/generate-ai-code-stream/route.ts (2)
37-42: Global state will cause issues in serverless/multi-instance deployments.The use of
globalvariables forconversationStateandsandboxFileCacheworks for development but will cause state inconsistency across Lambda/Edge function instances in production. The comment correctly notes this, but consider adding a TODO or tracking issue.Is there a plan to migrate this to Redis or Convex persistence? The current implementation will lose state on cold starts and won't share state across instances.
48-105: Well-structured system prompt with clear rules.The prompt engineering is thorough with explicit constraints on file counts, Tailwind usage, and SVG handling. The XML format for file output is clearly documented.
src/lib/streaming/ai-provider.ts (1)
313-321: Documented workaround for experimental OpenAI reasoning options.The comment clearly notes this may not be supported in all AI SDK versions. Consider adding error handling if the option causes issues.
AGENTS.md (1)
49-67: Comprehensive streaming architecture documentation.The data flow and architecture overview accurately reflects the new SSE-based streaming implementation. Clear explanation of the generate → apply → preview workflow.
ARCHITECTURE_ANALYSIS.md (2)
10-11: Inconsistency: References Clerk, but AGENTS.md indicates Stack Auth migration.Line 10 states "Authentication: Clerk with JWT" but AGENTS.md (line 42-43) documents the migration to Stack Auth. Update for consistency.
-- **Authentication**: Clerk with JWT +- **Authentication**: Stack Auth with JWT (migrated from Clerk)
17-79: Document describes Inngest architecture, but PR migrates to streaming API routes.This documentation extensively covers Inngest functions and event orchestration, but the PR introduces a streaming-first architecture with API routes. Consider:
- Adding a migration note indicating this describes the legacy architecture
- Updating to reflect the new streaming-based workflow
- Renaming to
ARCHITECTURE_ANALYSIS_LEGACY.mdIs this document intended to describe the legacy Inngest architecture, or should it be updated to reflect the new streaming-first approach introduced in this PR?
src/lib/streaming/types.ts (1)
278-287: Well-defined ModelId type with comprehensive model support.The union type clearly enumerates all supported models including the 'auto' option. This provides excellent type safety for model selection throughout the codebase.
src/lib/streaming/file-manifest.ts (1)
184-239: Well-implemented file tree generation with proper sorting.The
buildFileTreefunction correctly:
- Builds a hierarchical structure from flat file paths
- Sorts directories before files, then alphabetically
- Generates clean ASCII tree output
src/lib/streaming/context-selector.ts (3)
29-60: LGTM: Clean text search implementation.The case-insensitive search with context extraction is well-implemented. The 3-line context window provides adequate surrounding code for match evaluation.
193-226: LGTM: Well-designed ranking algorithm.The file-level aggregation with match bonus provides a good balance between confidence and coverage. The two-level sort (score → confidence) ensures consistent ordering.
436-461: LGTM: Clean orchestration of context selection workflow.The function provides a clear entry point for the full context selection pipeline. The default parameters (3 primary files, 5 context files) are reasonable.
src/lib/streaming/sse.ts (4)
8-97: LGTM: Well-designed type hierarchy for SSE events.The discriminated union pattern with specialized event interfaces provides excellent type safety while maintaining flexibility through the index signature. The event types comprehensively cover the streaming use cases mentioned in the PR summary.
180-182: Verify CORS policy aligns with security requirements.Line 180 sets
Access-Control-Allow-Origin: *, which allows any origin to consume the SSE stream. This is appropriate for public APIs but may be too permissive if the streaming endpoints require authentication or handle sensitive data.Please confirm:
- Are the SSE endpoints (
/api/generate-ai-code-stream,/api/apply-ai-code-stream) public or authenticated?- If authenticated, should CORS be restricted to specific origins?
- Does the authentication mechanism prevent CSRF attacks when using wildcard CORS?
If restricting origins is needed, consider reading from environment variables:
'Access-Control-Allow-Origin': process.env.ALLOWED_ORIGINS || '*',
208-233: LGTM: Robust error handling and resource cleanup.The wrapper ensures stream closure even on errors through the
finallyblock, and properly sends error events to the client. The background execution pattern is appropriate for Next.js API routes.
239-312: LGTM: Correct SSE parsing with proper buffer management.The parsing logic correctly handles:
- Partial chunks buffered between reads (line 286)
- Invalid JSON gracefully skipped (appropriate for SSE)
- Resource cleanup via
releaseLock()in finally blockThe silent JSON failures are acceptable for SSE streams where malformed events should not break the connection.
src/lib/streaming/index.ts (1)
1-97: LGTM: Clean barrel module organizing streaming utilities.The re-export structure provides a convenient single import path for all streaming functionality. The organization by category (SSE, Types, AI Provider, File Manifest, Context Selector) makes the API surface easy to understand.

Move architecture documentation to the explanations/ folder.
This workflow documentation file is placed in the root directory, which violates the project's coding guidelines. Documentation files should be in the explanations/ folder except for core setup files.
🔎 Suggested fix
#!/bin/bash
# Move file to explanations/ folder
git mv AGENT_WORKFLOW.md explanations/AGENT_WORKFLOW.mdBased on coding guidelines: "Store all .md documentation files in @/explanations/ directory, except for core setup files (CLAUDE.md, README.md)"
🤖 Prompt for AI Agents
In AGENT_WORKFLOW.md around lines 1 to 374, the architecture documentation is
located in the repository root but policy requires all markdown docs (except
core setup files) live under explanations/; move the file into explanations/
(e.g., explanations/AGENT_WORKFLOW.md) using git mv, update any internal links
or references in the repo that point to AGENT_WORKFLOW.md to the new path, and
run a quick repo check to ensure no CI or docs index expects the file at the old
location.

Update AI SDK dependencies to current major versions and use bun for version management.
The pinned versions are significantly outdated. Latest available versions are:
@ai-sdk/anthropic: 3.0.1 (currently 1.1.6)@ai-sdk/google: 3.0.1 (currently 1.1.6)@ai-sdk/openai: 3.0.1 (currently 1.1.9)ai: 6.0.3 (currently 4.2.0)
These are major version upgrades that may include breaking changes. Pinned versions also prevent automatic security patches from minor updates. Use bun update @ai-sdk/anthropic @ai-sdk/google @ai-sdk/openai ai to upgrade, then test thoroughly given the major version jumps.

Build failure: Incorrect destructuring of getProviderAndModel return value.
The pipeline shows getProviderAndModel returns { model, config, isAnthropic, ... }, not { provider, modelName }. Additionally, generateObject result needs the schema type parameter for proper typing.

Major: Unsafe type casting violates strict TypeScript guidelines.
Lines 354 and 422 use as any casts to access an imports property that doesn't exist on the FileInfo interface (from ./types). This violates the coding guideline: "Strict TypeScript usage - avoid using any type in code."
🔎 Proposed fix: Extend FileInfo interface or create new type
Option 1: Extend FileInfo interface in src/lib/streaming/types.ts:
export interface FileInfo {
path: string;
type: 'component' | 'page' | 'api' | 'style' | 'config' | 'other';
size: number;
lastModified: number;
imports?: string[]; // Add this
exports?: string[]; // Add this if needed
// ... other fields
}Option 2: Create a defensive check:
export function selectContextFiles(
primaryFiles: string[],
allFiles: Record<string, string>,
manifest: FileManifest,
maxContext: number = 5
): string[] {
const contextFiles = new Set<string>();
// For each primary file, find related files
for (const primaryFile of primaryFiles) {
const fileInfo = manifest.files[primaryFile];
if (!fileInfo) continue;
- // Get imports from this file
- const imports = (fileInfo as any).imports || [];
+ // Get imports from this file if available
+ const imports = 'imports' in fileInfo ? (fileInfo as any).imports : [];Apply similar changes at line 422 in findParentComponent.
As per coding guidelines, TypeScript strict mode requires avoiding any type.

In src/lib/streaming/context-selector.ts around lines 340 to 375, the code
unsafely casts fileInfo to any to read an imports property; update types and
usages to remove any: add imports?: string[] to the FileInfo interface in
src/lib/streaming/types.ts (or create a narrower interface extending FileInfo
that includes imports) and then replace the (fileInfo as any).imports usage with
a safe check like: const imports = Array.isArray((fileInfo as
ExtendedFileInfo).imports) ? (fileInfo as ExtendedFileInfo).imports : []; also
apply the same pattern/fix at the similar unsafe cast location in
findParentComponent around line 422 so all code uses the typed interface and
runtime checks instead of any.

Critical: Logic error causes incorrect import path resolution.
Lines 398-401 return inside the loop on the first iteration, so only .jsx is ever tried. The function should check if the file exists before returning, or return after the loop.

Avoid as any casts; extend FileInfo interface instead.
The casts on lines 274, 281 bypass type checking. Per coding guidelines, strict TypeScript should avoid any. Extend the FileInfo interface or create an internal extended type.
🔎 Proposed fix
In types.ts, extend FileInfo:
export interface FileInfo {
// ... existing fields
componentInfo?: {
name: string;
childComponents: string[];
isPage: boolean;
isLayout: boolean;
};
imports?: string[];
}Then remove the casts:
- (info as any).componentInfo = componentInfo;
+ info.componentInfo = componentInfo;
}
}
// Analyze imports
const imports = analyzeImports(content);
if (imports.length > 0) {
- (info as any).imports = imports;
+ info.imports = imports;

In src/lib/streaming/file-manifest.ts around lines 268 to 284, avoid the two `as
any` casts by extending the FileInfo type to include the optional fields used
here: add an optional `componentInfo` property with the shape { name: string;
childComponents: string[]; isPage: boolean; isLayout: boolean } and an optional
`imports?: string[]` in your shared types (e.g., types.ts or where FileInfo is
defined), update any helper signatures (extractComponentInfo, analyzeImports) to
return those exact types, then remove the casts and assign directly to
info.componentInfo and info.imports; update any callers/usages to handle the new
optional fields if necessary.
