The Institut de Recherche Criminelle de la Gendarmerie Nationale (IRCGN) is a unit of the French National Gendarmerie, in charge of the scientific aspects of investigations, with the following missions :
- the analysis of samples taken in the field by specialized personnel: criminal identification technicians (CIT)
- support and assistance to field units during complex investigations
- training
- research
The IRCGN is part of the National Gendarmerie's Judicial Pole alongside the Central Criminal Intelligence Service and the Intelligent Transport Systems Observatory. Created in 1987 under the name Section Technique d'Investigation Criminelle de la Gendarmerie (STICG), the institute has been located in Pontoise (Val-d'Oise) since the summer of 2015. It is one of the 6 French forensic laboratories alongside the 5 laboratories of the National Police.
