Data and Variables

In the prep work for this class, the students learned:

  1. How to navigate the Tableau workspace
  2. How to connect to data
  3. An understanding of Tableau data types and how mixed data is handled
  4. How to create a dashboard

Announcements

  1. Always check with your program manager to see if there are any upcoming deadlines you should highlight!

Large Group Time (Instructor)

  1. Any additional tips or tricks when navigating a Tableau public workspace would be excellent!
  2. Data types were covered in addition to how mixed data types are sometimes interpreted. Additional context on why it is important to have clean data before you begin visualization would be worth highlighting.

Topics That Require Careful Attention

  1. Saving your work (publishing)
  2. Descriptive names of worksheets
  3. Dimensions and Measures

Studio (IA Notes)

  1. Students use the Mushroom Classification dataset from Kaggle.
  2. Students are asked to use 2 worksheets in order to create a dashboard, encourage them to use as many as they would like!
  3. Students may struggle with dimensions and measures, be sure to come prepared with examples or further explanations to help them grasp the topic.
  4. Students are asked to create aliases for their charts, this was not explicitly covered within the textbook so they may need additional support when doing so.
