Adapted from Danielle Dai's awesome post on hand-drawn maps for MaptimeSF.
Leave the laptops at home because Maptime DC is going analog - aka it's arts & crafts time!

##Activities Work on a personal project, or pick a couple of activities to do at Maptime! Be sure to bring your own art supplies, though we'll have some trace paper, pens, and colored pencils available. Feel free to bring references or things you'd like to trace as well. These activities are inspired in part by Map Art Lab.
###01 Mental Maps & Commute Trips, Rawr How do you get from point A to point B? What do you note along the way? If you're curious about Mental Maps, a couple folks at Berkeley's I-School have a great "Visualizing Mental Maps of San Francisco" project. If you need ideas on how to draw your map or what to feature, check out Kevin Lynch's Image of the City elements.
Examples!
- Sketch a map of your neighborhood, and the places you live in and out of.
- Draw your commute, and the sights along the way.
- Draw how you got to Maptime tonight.
###02 Washington, DC Local Treasure Map Are you really into geocaching or FINDING TREASURE?! I know I like treasure. Unfortunately, I don't have gold to hide, nor hundred dollar bills whose location I can tweet out, but we can still find DC treasures all around.
- Make a list of your favorite DC "not for tourists super legit" spots or paths. For example, I could make a map of legit Ethiopian spots, or favorite places to walk in Rock Creek Park.
- Draw it! Need a base map? Try Maps --> Image from Stamen.
- For the spirited folk, crumble up your paper and stain it with tea. More instructions here.
- Adding a pirate ship in the Potomac is optional.
- Trade your treasure map with a fellow Maptimer and go adventuring, yay!
###03 Where Do We Go Did you play lots of Carmen Sandiego as a kid, or have you spent hours procrastinating on Sporcle? This activity might be for you...
- Pick and print a blank world map in whatever projection you so desire from here: http://www.worldatlas.com/webimage/testmaps/maps.htm. Or draw one up yourself, whatever you like.
- Highlight places you've lived, places you've been, places you'd like to go, etc.
- BONUS: Guess where Carmen Sandiego is.
###04 Cartouches Don't forget to spruce up your map and:
- Draw a sweet compass rose
- Add a decorative map title
- Adorn your map with sea monsters and the like
- Frame it!
Ping us at @MaptimeDC so we can collect and showcase your sweet hand-drawn maps.
