Non-OGL TTRPGs: The Scoop

In late December of 2022 and early January of 2023, a leak was passed around detailing the release of OGL1.1 as promised by Wizards of the Coasts. Included in this leak as of writing on 2023-01-10 is wording that prior OGL1.0a content may be invalid going forward. You can read more about the situation here at Gizmodo. The fallout since then has been immense, and the Wikipedia Article on Wizards of the Coast covers the outcome very well.

Needless to say, the Obsidian TTRPG Community has moved onto alternatives.

The Template

Whether or not this is true, this has soured some of the gaming community. It has also encouraged others to explore testing the waters of other TTRPG systems. As such, this list is devoted to highlighting TTRPG's that have no affiliation with the OGL at all.

Please use the following template when adding your addition. If possible please try to keep it in alphabetical order but if not, I'll clean it up. :)

**Name:** **[Name of Game](www.name-of-game.com)**

**License:** If Known, else Delete

**System Type:** D20, Storybuilding, reading tea leaves, etc. If Known, else Delete.

**Summary:** What is the Game about? How would you sell it to a friend?

**Submitted By:** Your Discord Name or Github Name.

The Games

B

Name: BRP Classic

License: Fully Copyright by Chaosium Inc.

System Type: D20

Summary: BRP is a slightly simpler ruleset that has been the foundation for Stormbringer, Call of Cthulhu, Superworld, ElfQuest, Ringworld and quite a few more games. The stats are similar to D&D, 3d6, but skills use a percentile base. Your Stealth skill might be 75% for instance. To succeed you would need to roll 75 or less on d100.

The crucial difference from D&D is that there are no classes. Like GURPS you can mix and match how you want your character to develop, your barbarian warrior might have Stealth, and maybe a healing spell and spell to open locks as well as his combat skills.

Name: Bunkers and Badasses

License: Unknown. Nerdvana and Gearbox are figuring out how they want to handle community content, but they are most certainly not OGL.

System Type: D20

Summary: You think with the name Bunkers and Badasses, this would be OGL, but nope. Satire. This is about as close to Dungeons and Dragons as I am to Santa Claus, in that we both like cookies. Guns, explosions, loot, lots of enemies, and Badass Move shenanigans. This game does not take itself seriously and demands the BM (Bunker Master) maximize the fun of the game no matter what. So if the roll ends up a one but somehow the gun slipping out of one's hands misfires and sets off a chain of events that creates the end of the civilization as we know it, and that makes your players happy? Make it happen!

Also, check out the Discord Community here where the devs of the game hang out. We're cooking up some awesome Homebrew with, and without them. Just in case, y'know?

G

Name: Gumshoe

License: (CC BY 3.0)

System Type: d6, Storytelling

Summary: You will always find the clue. Imagine playing a game where the fun comes from trying to piece together a mystery and discovering why these things tie together. There's no excessive rolling of dice hoping you get the correct number to progress, or getting stuck without the lead. You're always moving forward, and it's all about the journey and a few spent points here and there.

The road you take in Gumshoe is one that will lead to good outcomes, but not necessarily for you.

Check out Cthulu Confidential and Night's Black Agents campaign modules for a more gritty experience.

H

Name: Heroes of Adventure

License: (CC BY 4.0)

System Type: D20

Summary: You and your friends are a group of travelers, explorers, mercenaries or treasure hunters. You travel through the perilous wilderness from settlement to settlement. Doing what? Taking on missions, jobs, and adventures that others refuse to do. Man, sucks to be you.

M

Name: Monster of the Week

License: Apocolype World

System Type: D6 super-simple mechanics

Summary: This is one of many games based on the Apocolypse World mechanics, and so far my favorite. The rules are super easy to learn, and the gameplay is focused on storytelling. Episodes are played like a TV series, think X-files of Supernatural.

O

Name: The One Ring

System Type: Dice Pool (1d12-1+Xd6)

Summary: You and your friends are adventurers in Middle-earth in the Third Age.

S

Name: Shadowrun 6e

System Type: D6 Dice Pool

Summary: Distopian near-future with a mix of fantasy & cyberpunk elements. Hiest/Detective style gameplay. The lore of the world is deep, all the rules take a while to learn, but mixing magic and tech with detective/hiest stories leads to lots of unexpected creative play.

W

Name: World of Darkness

System Type: D10 Dice Pool, Storytelling-Heavy

Summary: Play a classical monster (vampire, werewolf, etc.), a mage, or a monter hunter in a dark and horrific modern world. Usually campaigns limit the PCs to a particular monster type, but you can mix them as the base rules are universal.
