Play with Chromecast

To play files on your Chromecast. Do as follows:

  1. Make sure you selected Chromecast as your receiver type in extension settings.
  2. Select your video, audio or picture file (videos can be optionally transcoded - tick box on bottom left).
  3. After you make your selection, file will be automatically send to the Chromecast selected in extension settings.

If video does not play:

  • Make sure the content audio is stereo, otherwise select Transcode Video + Audio during file selection (only audio transcoding is not implemented yet)
  • Check your firewall settings.

Subtitles support

Since v6 both external and merged subtitles (inside video container) are supported. Use Add Subtitles button during video selection to select external subtitles file. Subtitles inside video container will be automatically detected and send to Chromecast. When you tick Transcode Video during video selection, subtitles will be burned into video instead.

Subtitles that use custom fonts (like fansubs) can be played, but require transcoding.

Chromecast does not support merged (built-in) subtitles. When casting file (without transcoding) with internal subtitles they need to be extracted and prepared especially for Chromecast (this is done automatically). Depending on the file size and HDD speed this might take a short while. Please wait patiently. If you see HDD led blinking, then subs are being prepared and everything is working as expected.

Important info

Please note that Chromecast does not support many video formats (e.g. HEVC). Check supported media formats here. If your video does not play, tick "Transcode Video" option during the file selection to encode video to supported H.264 format.

Using Chromecast Remote

Remote overview

The remote allows you to control playback directly from Gnome Shell. The remote widget appears only after connection with Chromecast has been established. Options related to the remote (like position and seek time) can be configured.

Playlist items order can be changed via "Drag and Drop". Drop item anywhere outside the playlist to remove it from queue.
