Generating a Design Plan

It was both a positive and negative to have a very vague initial proposal for this project. In essence, the goal was to develop a scoring system for my group's final pinball development project. This was great because it allowed for almost total creative freedom from the start (not that a well-defined initial plan would have hindered that in any way); however, this was also not very helpful for the exact same reason. All the same, a plan was generated as work was started, and as the project came together the scoring system that I developed evolved in turn.

The Final Design

The final design for this scoring system is straight-forward. It features two main contributors to the score:

  • The time spent actively playing in a round

  • How many times obstacles in the play-field were struck

This approach was designed to play into the Battleship theme, as the obstacle in the play-field are battleships and striking one with the pinball would act as a "hit" that counts against the ship's "health" and for the player's score.
