Git with it: Collaborative Coding and Version Control with Git

Have you ever broken your code and/or lost track of the changes you've made? Have you ever trawled through your manual back ups to find some files you've hidden away? Have your collaborators ever emailed you code fixes and you struggle to see what has been updated? Maybe Git can help! Git is software for tracking changes in any set of files and also for coordinating work among collaborators. This workshop is designed for beginners and will guide participants in setting up git. We will walk through some key git concepts then, put these into into practice during an interactive session.

Participants should have:

Presenter Bio: Assoc Prof Daniel Falster is an ARC Future Fellow in the School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences. Daniel uses a combination of maths, computer models, and large data sets to test fundamental ideas about the ecological and evolutionary processes shaping forest structure and diversity. He uses git and GitHub every day, and is passionate about open data, reproducible research, and teaching biologists to code.

Co presenters:

  • Fiona Robinson : Fiona is a plant modelling ecologist and PhD candidate at UNSW. She gets pretty excited about weird and wonderful plants, animals and fungi and finding new colour palettes to apply to graphs, maps and drawings (bulbasaur's colours being a current favourite).

  • Fonti Kar: Fonti is a postdoctoral research associate in the Falster Lab at University of New South Wales. Her research interests span broadly from behavioural ecology, quantitative research methods, phenotypic plasticity and life history evolution. She is an biologist at heart but is currently working as an R package developer.
