3.0.1 - Windows Audio is Annoying Edition

This release is a small patch to fix an issue seen in studios on Windows.

In this use, often when BAPS is left alone with studio power off, Windows can unpatch the sound output. Possibly due to appearing / disappearing HDMI audio sources from the displays.

This version simply forces the audio output to be reconfigured on every item load, such that the problem can be rectified by a presenter almost instinctively.

Welcome to BAPSicle (BAPS3)!

After 100+ hours of code writing, 10's of hours studio testing and 1's of hours tearing hair out, it's finally here! This is BAPS3.

New features

Completely re-written in programming languages that still exist, BAPS 3.0.0 brings new features over BAPS2:

  • Multi-platform Support - We're no longer stuck to Windows, enjoy GitHub builds for Windows, MacOS and Ubuntu-flavoured linux.
  • Waveforms - You can now see what you're playing!
  • Enhanced Libraries - Now you can pull in the library content from MyRadio, gone are the 3 fixed lists.
  • Advanced Audio Markers - Making audio intro, cue and outro points is way more obvious
  • File Preloading - With the MyRadio API, we can preload your entire show's audio to the local disk, leading to lightning fast loading, without any need for a VPN / SMB file shares.
  • Web-based UI - The server can be configured, logs be read and generally looked after over HTTP, no longer requiring as much remote desktop.
  • RIP Visual Studio - No longer is Visual Studio required for any kind of sensible compilation / editing.

Some lost features

Some things haven't make their way over (yet), but these are few and not too often used:

  • Security User Management - This will be coming shortly.
  • Audio Wall - Everyone's favourite touch screen controller grid will be coming soon...
  • The Draggy Bars ™️ - Now we have waveforms, actually sensible playback automation can come soon...
  • Text Items - Hopefully there will be a push to add text item support to WebStudio/MyRadio generally, such that BAPS3 support will follow suite.
  • The Early 2000's Charm - I'll get the text to speech welcome message working, promise!

Final word

It's been a long time since BAPS2 began service in ~2005/6.

To all previous URY Computing Teams who have tried to bring their vision of BAPS3 to life, I applaud the time commitment of your work. Writing a playout system is not easy, even when it looks like 'just 3 Windows Media Players'.

In these unprecedented times, Covid-19 has brought hardships for many, but it did give one big project opportunity for my home-stuck self to get into. With the support of other URY members, both technically and socially, i've managed to tick one huge to-do off the URY bucket list.

Without the need for WebStudio, we would have no UI. Without MyRadio, we would have no backend. Without Open Source Software, we would have no BAPS3.

Cheers to the (hopefully) many years of service BAPS3 has to come!
