See https://github.com/Vortyne/pureRGB/blob/master/FEATURES.md for the full features documentation.
----SETUP INSTRUCTIONS START----
Scroll to the bottom of this page and download the BPS patch file for the version you want from the file list below. Use Floating IPS or an online patcher to patch pokemon blue for PureBlue or PureGreen. Patch pokemon red for PureRed.
Always use these patch files on the original english game. Don't try to use any on a game that's already been patched.
----SETUP INSTRUCTIONS END----
The game now has a save file updater. If you use a save file from a previous version or even the original game, the game will update the save and everything should work fine. Please indicate whether you came from an earlier version or the original game if the game asks. It will also ask you whether to warp to PALLET TOWN. It is recommended to warp to PALLET town when you update your save. Otherwise you might end up in a glitched position.
2.6.2 Patch Notes
New Features:
==QUALITY OF LIFE==
- The Channeler on the 2nd Floor of pokemon tower (same floor you battle your rival) now wants to borrow your silph scope after you save mr fuji. You can make the channeler hold on to your silph scope until you need to come back to the tower later so it doesn't take up space in your inventory.
BUGFIXES
Fixes for Bugs in the original game:
-
BUG: If you save in a dark map like Rock Tunnel, reset, go to the continue screen from the title screen, press B until you get back to the title screen, then go to the continue screen again, it will get the dark area palette. FIX: Reset the palette in the continue menu so it doesn't do that.
-
BUG: The options menu is dark when you are in dark areas like rock tunnel. FIX: Reset the palette in this menu specifically.
Fixes for Bugs I caused:
- BUG: If you try to teach a move like flash in a dark area like Rock tunnel, when showing YES/NO/HIDE menu, colors will look strange. FIX: Don't reset the palette.
- BUG: Trade evolutions won't evolve by trading. FIX: Re-order their evolution data so trade evos work. They still evolve at level 37 normally too.

2.6.0 Patch Notes
New Features:
==NEW AREAS / EVENTS==
-
An Entirely new CINNABAR VOLCANO area was added based off of beta/prerelease content. Based off of an unused map called MOLTRES. CINNABAR VOLCANO is located in the middle of the sea route between PALLET TOWN and CINNABAR ISLAND. You can catch MOLTRES earlier in the game here. There are also a bunch of other events and lots of new visuals. If you don't fight MOLTRES here, it still shows up in VICTORY ROAD. Your MAGMAR can be upgraded with new abilities here too. This area can be entirely turned off from a new WORLD OPTIONS menu in Player's PC.
-
The POWER PLANT was greatly visually enhanced with a beta tileset originally intended for it from Spaceworld 97. A roof area of the POWER PLANT was added, and a secret area where you can power up your MAGNETON was added. Also, a puzzle with electrical doors was added to the area preventing access to ZAPDOS until you explore around the place and press some buttons to turn them off. The layout is essentially the same, you can just access "the final area" blocked by electrical doors earlier. The map becomes sort of a loop instead of one big line.
-
If you caught GHOST MAROWAK, after defeating GIOVANNI in Viridian City you can bring MAROWAK to the basement of Pokemon Tower to lay it to rest. Fight some spooky spirits based on the weirder gen 1 sprites (they all have unique abilities) and see a touching reunion between GHOST MAROWAK and its child CUBONE! (If you didn't catch it, you can bring a color changed MAROWAK to POKEMON TOWER basement and it'll still work.)
-
ERIK and SARA are NPCs in the original game in FUCHSIA CITY who are looking for each other. Reunite them and go talk to them in the SAFARI ZONE to start a new little adventure where you can visit their house on Route 19 (Sea route below FUCHSIA CITY) and join them in their marine research! You can power up your DRAGONAIR by helping them out. Their house's location is based on an unused house in older map code on route 21. It was moved to route 19 since CINNABAR VOLCANO was placed in the same location on ROUTE 21 instead.
-
You can enter one of the previously unenterable buildings near SILPH CO from a secret entrance. Turns out this building is how TEAM ROCKET snuck into SAFFRON CITY and invaded SILPH CO. so quickly. You can power up your WEEZING here!
-
An NPC in SAFFRON CITY will tell you about signature moves. Certain pokemon get additional power or accuracy with specific moves. EXAMPLE: ACID when used by ARBOK has 100 base power instead of 50.
==QUALITY OF LIFE==
-
PC Item space increased to 60 up from the original game's 50.
-
On every option menu you can now press SELECT to have the game explain whatever option you're pointing at.
-
The MOVEDEX can now be sorted alphabetically. Switch between sorting modes by pressing SELECT in the movedex.
-
The ITEMFINDER can now detect hidden coins in the GAME CORNER.
-
The SS ANNE captain will let you enter the SS ANNE area without a ticket after helping him. Also he will get rid of your ticket so it doesn't take up space in your storage.
-
You can order food in the kitchen while on the SS ANNE. This heals your pokemon.
-
You can view the contents of a PC box by pressing SELECT while scrolled to WITHDRAW, even if your party is full. Lets you view the status of pokemon in the box, but you can't withdraw them.
-
The game will now show whether a pokemon has an APEX CHIP applied to it on the status screen of the pokemon.
-
You can use a wider array of glyphs in player/pokemon nicknames. For example, you can now use numbers in pokemon/player nicknames.
-
A .cheats file was added to the repository. If you want to know game shark codes for pureRGB, check that file. It's pretty barebones currently but you can request additions if you want.
==VISUALS==
-
Fast currents in Seafoam Islands are now visually shown. They will move a bit slower on SGB / Original Game Boy due to processing speed limitations.
-
Static Pokemon Encounters (MEWTWO/ARTICUNO (in the volcano)/MOLTRES/ZAPDOS/SNORLAX) now have fancy animations before the battle begins.
-
A New color mode, Y2 was added. It's basically the same colors as Y (Yellow's original colors) but adjusted to look like they would if you were playing on an original GBC screen. This means they're less intense visually.
-
In DIGLETT's CAVE, if you have OG+ Icons mode turned on, DIGLETTs will pop up and down, hiding from you as you approach them.
-
The BIKE SHOP was enhanced with untranslated japanese text (now translated, such as its name MIRACLE CYCLE), some additional tiles that are only used in the link cable multiplayer areas just so you at least see then in normal gameplay, and a bit more text for flavour on these new objects. Some beta tiles were also repurposed to be used as signs inside the shop.
-
A new front sprite was added for FARFETCH'D based on the Red/Green sprite but enhanced quite a bit.
-
7 New alternate front sprite choices were added on a new options page: RG SPEAROW, RB FARFETCHD, RG GOLDUCK, RG SCYTHER, SW JYNX, RG OMANYTE, YELLOW ARTICUNO
-
The following Spaceworld Back Sprites were tweaked: FARFETCHD, DRAGONAIR, DODRIO, PINSIR, SCYTHER
-
RAGE's animation was improved.
-
BONEMERANG and BONE CLUB's animations were improved.
-
FIREWALL's animation was improved when using the "powered up" version.
-
CONVERSION's animation was improved
-
SONICBOOM's animation was improved
-
When using POKE DOLL in battle it has an animation now.
-
In Celadon City, you can enable an unused rainbow palette that was intended for the city by talking to the "City of Rainbow Dreams" sign. You can talk to it again to turn it off. It looks a bit weird if you're playing on GBC (colors shift around when text is visualized on screen), but on SGB it's more consistent since this was what the original code was intended for.
==TRAINER AI CHANGES==
-
Elite Four Lance and Champion Rival have fully customized movesets for their pokemon now.
-
Most trainers wont use boosting moves if that stat is already maxed out.
-
For trainers with type advantage AI code, Moves that have no effect such as thunderbolt on a ground pokemon will be discouraged even more than not very effective moves are.
==MOVE CHANGES==
-
SIGNATURE MOVES were added to the game. For specific pokemon, specific moves will get additional power or accuracy. Example: POISON STING on BEEDRILL will have 45 base power instead of 15. An NPC in SAFFRON CITY can tell you which pokemon and which moves get bonuses.
-
DEFENSE CURL now makes all SUPER EFFECTIVE moves to normal (1x) damage to the user. It can be very useful on pokemon with 4x weaknesses like GOLEM, RHYDON, or other bulky pokemon.
-
DOUBLESLAP now does double damage on sleeping pokemon, but causes them to wake up.
-
SONICBOOM was made a priority move. GHOST type, with 50 power. If you use it on the first turn a pokemon can attack, it will always make the opponent flinch.
-
ACID ARMOR now gives a combined effect of REFLECT and LIGHT SCREEN, essentially cutting all damage in half.
-
EXPLOSION and SELFDESTRUCT still have 140 power and do heavy recoil, but if you use them when you have less than 1/3 health left, they will behave as they originally did. Their power will be 250, they will cut the opponent's defense in half, but your pokemon will always faint after using it. Also, if EXPLOSION / SELFDESTRUCT miss in "recoil mode" they will now do 1/4 of your health in recoil.
-
BONEMERANG now has 60 power, 95 accuracy, hits twice. 30% chance of reducing opponent speed. Also, it can hit FLYING types for neutral damage unlike other GROUND type moves.
-
FIREWALL was greatly enhanced. Now it has 90 accuracy, and starts with 20 base power. Always burns the opponent. If you use it on a burned opponent, power increases to 40. If you use it again on the same opponent, power increases to a maximum of 80. If the user is at least level 50, it increases first to 80 base power and up to a maximum of 140 power.
-
CONVERSION has an entirely new set of effects. When you use CONVERSION, the user can convert between two modes, ATTACK mode and DEFENSE mode. DEFENSE mode cuts all damage in half. ATTACK mode will choose a specific attack that is always super effective against the opponent, but will turn off DEFENSE mode.
-
Movesets were tweaked to balance with the above changes.
==AUDIO CHANGES==
- The game's unused fanfare sound effect has been used in a couple of new events such as the...

Scroll to the bottom of this page and download the IPS patch file for the version you want from the file list below. Use Lunar IPS or an online patcher to patch pokemon blue for PureBlue or PureGreen. Patch pokemon red for PureRed.
Always use these patch files on the original english game. Don't try to use any on a game that's already been patched.
----SETUP INSTRUCTIONS END----
Any v2.5.0 or higher save file should work in this new version - but I would recommend loading the save normally rather than loading a save state. You may experience strange behaviour if you load a save state during something that I have changed between v2.0 and the current version. If you are stuck in place on loading the save in the new version, use Fly, Teleport, or Pocket Abra to fix the issue. If you get a really bad bug on loading your save, try going to somewhere else on the old version (Viridian city pokemon center is a good choice), and saving there instead, then loading on the new version again.
v2.5.5 Patch Notes
BUGFIXES
Fixed for Bugs in the Original Game
- BUG: Oak's text is messed up when receiving pokeballs from him. FIX: Put the messed up text on the next line of dialogue to fix it.
- BUG: Safari zone east's sign is incorrect in its directions. FIX: Put the correct directions.
Fixes for Bugs I caused:
- BUG: Only one of the hidden items on Route 25 was obtainable, not both. FIX: Fix the incorrect assignment due to the Bill's Garden Changes in version 2.4
- BUG: Weird glitches on hooking a fished pokemon. FIX: Fix the error in optimized code I made in 2.5.4
- BUG: Moves with side effects like MEDITATE, SHARPEN where they can raise multiple stats could do things like say "Nothing happened!" twice if both stats are maxed, or not display the move animation if the first stat was maxed but the second one wasn't. FIX: Make "Nothing happened!" only display once if both are maxed, and make the move animation always play as expected if the move worked.
TWEAKS
- Scyther starts with the move SHARPEN now. Seems like it makes sense.

v2.5.4 Patch Notes
BUGFIXES
Fixes for Bugs I caused:
- BUG: Daisy's tea event just doesn't work in some situations due to her sitting sprite being hidden in normal gameplay if you get the town map early in the game FIX: Hide her walking sprite after calling your rival from celadon with the payphone and show her sitting sprite
- BUG: Giovanni can skip turns erroneously if he tries to use DIRE HIT with a 20% chance each turn, but due to your pokemon appearing dangerous, decides not to. FIX: Attack instead of just doing nothing that turn
- BUG: Very old bug from the original release of pureRGB in which buying coins at the game corner can unhide certain NPCs and items. Including the X Special x2 in pewter city, and the rocket who gives you TM28 in cerulean city. FIX: Stop writing to a byte of wram used for game NPC hide show states incorrectly with this coin purchase code.
- BUG: Viewing the pokedex area function of a pokemon that can appear in good rod encounters in salt water after obtaining the FISHING GUIDE can cause battle sprites to glitch out. FIX: When in battle, never check a specific flag that can been set by the pokedex functions to change where back sprites get loaded. (this bug was really hard to find)

See https://github.com/Vortyne/pureRGB/blob/master/FEATURES.md for the full features documentation.
----SETUP INSTRUCTIONS START----
Scroll to the bottom of this page and download the IPS patch file for the version you want from the file list below. Use Lunar IPS to patch pokemon blue for PureBlue or PureGreen. Patch pokemon red for PureRed.
Always use these patch files on the original english game. Don't try to use any on a game that's already been patched.
----SETUP INSTRUCTIONS END----
Any v2.0 or higher save file should work in this new version - but I would recommend loading the save normally rather than loading a save state. You may experience strange behaviour if you load a save state during something that I have changed between v2.0 and the current version. If you are stuck in place on loading the save in the new version, use Fly, Teleport, or Pocket Abra to fix the issue. If you get a really bad bug on loading your save, try going to somewhere else on the old version (Viridian city pokemon center is a good choice), and saving there instead, then loading on the new version again.
v2.5.2 Patch Notes
BUGFIXES
Fixes for Bugs I caused:
- BUG: Spinner tiles in rocket hideout and viridian gym don't have the animation they did in the original game FIX: code from shinpokered allows for faster spin tile movement as well as keeping the animated tiles.
- BUG: front sprite toggles for GRAVELER and VOLTORB weren't working as expected FIX: assign them to the correct option byte in the options pages so they work properly now
- BUG: champ arena's door can get permanently stuck closed so you can't go through it FIX: reset the "door is open" event always on entering the map
- BUG: Mew glitch doesn't work due to changes to the teams near where it's typically triggered in cerulean. FIX: Make the youngster with a level 17 slowpoke have a level 17 slowpoke instead of a level 18 one again, give him a level 17 growlithe as well. Make sure the swimmer in cerulean gym ends with a level 16 shellder. This keeps the mew glitch working as expected.
- BUG: AI using transform can result in extra PP being taken away from their copied moves FIX: should be kept track of accurately now

v2.5.0 Patch Notes
New Features:
==NEW AREAS / EVENTS==
-
An entirely new area was added in Indigo Plateau. After becoming champ you can talk to the woman in the top left of the indigo plateau lobby to enter the Champ Arena. In the Champ Arena you can battle all the gym leaders and elite four in rematches. Also some fun animations and sequences while doing it. Opponents in the Champ Arena have perfect IVs...so make sure to use APEX CHIPs on all your team! They also have custom movesets for all their pokemon, and the highest level of AI, so be ready. You can choose from many different audio tracks to play while battling all these opponents. Initially you face the opponents in a set order. After defeating all of them you can choose who you battle. They will be even stronger the second time you fight them! This area has more than 2000 lines of scripting. Although this might just be because I'm bad at optimizing code.
-
Past the first guard in indigo plateau you can find a door to a guy's house who lives on Route 23. He can change Pokemon typings back to their original ones if you want. You can choose exactly which pokemon use their new typings or original typings.
-
On Route 8 you can find a new small cave housing a prospector digging for diamonds. If you help him, he will enhance your ONIX to be stronger. Its base stats will be boosted and it will take less damage from WATER, ICE, and GRASS type moves.
-
After helping the prospector, you can find him at his house in Celadon. If you talk to him there after obtaining HM02, he will teach you how to use DIG to go between towns similar to the way you do with FLY.
==QUALITY OF LIFE==
-
Getting stuck due to deleting cut or surf won't happen. On islands autosurf will stay active after you delete your last surf pokemon so you can get back to a pokemon center. In cut alcoves, the cut tree will stay cut down until you load another map.
-
Item lists will remember your location after doing something instead of kicking you out of the item list in more situations. Examples: depositing an item from the overworld, using an item on a pokemon, using an item like repel, tossing all of an item, depositing an item in the pc, withdrawing an item from the pc, tossing all of an item in the pc, selling an item, buying an item
-
Instead of kicking you out of the menu in these situations, it will stay in the same spot: When you don't have enough money to buy an item, when you try to sell a key item.
-
Elevators will tell you when you select the floor you're currently on
-
Elevators will shake for longer/shorter depending on how far away the floor you selected from your current floor is.
-
Bills PC doesn't kick you out of menus as much. Won't kick you out of deposit/withdraw/release menus after performing an action, unless: 1. you are in the deposit menu and have only 1 pokemon left so can't deposit any more anyway 2. you are in the withdraw menu and have a full party or no pokemon are left in the box to withdraw 3. you are in the release menu and no pokemon are left to release in the current box
-
When learning moves by TM, the text for learning moves is reduced a bit. You can permanently skip the text that says "But X already knows 4 moves, forget a move to learn a new one?" and go straight to the "learn the move" part.
==VISUALS==
-
Fly's overworld animation when you fly to another town happens at a much smoother framerate than before
-
on GBC the game will turn on 2x CPU mode in the overworld to make things run even smoother
-
on GBC the game now supports smoother fading when doing fade animations. Turn on GBC FADE in the options to use it.
-
In the movedex, there are indicators on damaging moves showing whether they are PHYSICAL or SPECIAL.
-
A new unique animation was added for when you use DIG in the overworld.
-
The following spaceworld back sprites were enhanced: Charizard, Nidorina, Nidorino, Onix, Alakazam, Gyarados, Hitmonchan, Horsea, Hypno, Kadabra, Kangaskhan, Koffing, Machoke, Magmar, Marowak, Mew, Omastar, Paras, Seel, Tangela, Tauros, Weezing
==TRAINER AI CHANGES==
-
Opponents can have tracked PP now. Turn it on in the options. Makes the game a bit easier. Wild pokemon will have tracked PP too.
-
Prof Oak can use items in battle now.
-
Certain Trainers who want to use boosting moves on turn 1 will now only do that if it doesn't appear risky to do so. (Like if it looks like they will take you out quickly)
-
Trainers that can use boosting items like X Attack will only do so if it doesn't appear risky to use it.
-
Trainers won't use priority moves if you're invulnerable due to dig or fly (unless it's SWIFT)
-
Trainers with the super effective move selection AI will use mirror move if it results in a super effective move on you.
-
Expert trainers will use Teleport to heal if they have low HP
==MOVE CHANGES==
-
Instead of just healing your HP by 1/2 like Recover does, WITHDRAW and GROWTH now heal around 32.8% of your health and raise DEFENSE or SPECIAL by 1 stage respectively.
-
GHOST type attacks are now dynamic in their damage type. If your base attack is higher, they will be physical attacks. If your base special is higher they will be special attacks.
-
DREAM EATER was changed to be ghost type.
-
Less pokemon learn BARRAGE by level up. Instead pokemon learn some other less common moves.
It's a widely-learnable TM anyway. This reduces the number of opponents in the game who will use BARRAGE. -
RAGE's power was raised to 60
==AUDIO CHANGES==
-
If you turn on OG+ music mode, a beta victory theme will play when you defeat female trainers
-
If you turn on OG+ music mode, a beta healing theme will play when you rest at your house in pallet town
-
A small sound effect was added for getting on and off the bicycle, but only if you have the BIKE SONG option turned OFF.
-
A little sound effect will play when you toss an item.
==MINOR TWEAKS==
- Unused text that shows you a pokedex entry of Porygon in Silph Co was inserted into the game. You can see it on the top floor of Silph Co's computer monitor.
BUGFIXES
Fixes for Bugs in the original game:
-
BUG: Substitute can cause you to faint when you use it if the amount of HP to subtract to create the substitute is the exact HP you have left. FIX: if you have the exact amount of HP for a substitute it will work and leave you with 1HP left instead.
-
BUG: Believe it or not (no one does this) you can go to the menu and select SURF while surfing and facing a shore tile to get back on land. But there is a bug in which if you do this with an NPC standing on the tile you want to go on - but only if you're facing right and the NPC is to the right of you, you get stuck on water. FIX: just remove the feature to select SURF to go back on land, no one ever uses this feature and most don't know it exists.
-
BUG: On GBC or DMG, the screen flashes white for 1 frame after the screen turns black when starting a battle or during the fade between maps. FIX: using code from shinpokered, we can avoid disabling the screen for a frame to load the map or battle data in.
-
BUG: Pokeflute doesn't detect wild pokemon being asleep when used in battle. FIX: it does now and wakes them up as expected
-
BUG: On DMG, there is no silhouette effect when scrolling the player on screen at the start of battle. FIXED: silhouettes will work on DMG now.
-
BUG: The sign on route 17 can't be read from below FIX: Now it works when read from below.
-
BUG: The burglar in Pokemon Mansion 3F can block the player if they purposefully talk to them in a bad spot. FIX: slightly edit the map to prevent this
-
BUG: If all your pokemon have fainted except for 1 and you are on SHIFT mode, the game will still ask if you want to switch when the opponent sends out their next pokemon. FIX: Don't ask when the player can't switch pokemon anyway.
Fixes for Bugs I caused:
-
BUG: pressing start at the top of bottom of your PC item list would skip to the top/bottom as if you pressed DPAD LEFT. FIX: pressing start doesn't do anything as expected
-
BUG: pressing start in sell menus would scroll up by 1 as if you pressed DPAD LEFT. FIX: pressing start doesn't do anything as expected.
-
BUG: NPC in saffron gym tells you psychic is weak to bug and ghost even though in some cases this is wrong. FIX: if you have the setting turned on in which psychic is immune to ghost like in the original game, they will say psy...

v2.4.5 Patch Notes
Fixes for Bugs I caused:
- BUG: When exiting the SS Anne after getting CUT, the "SS Anne Leaving" animation is hidden by a black screen until it completes. FIXED - Now resets color palettes to avoid the black screen. The black screen was caused by a "deferred loading" setup I used to hide tile blocks getting replaced on first loading many maps - the screen would remain black until the map script runs once. In some cases with scripts that run immediately on entering a map I have to manually reset the palettes to avoid a black screen.
- BUG: "Super Effective" "Not Very Effective" etc. applies to SONICBOOM and SEISMIC TOSS. FIXED - They will ignore effectiveness messages as intended. I accidentally removed these moves' effects from an array that prevented an effectiveness message from showing up for them (this oversight happened when modifying Tri Attack in version 2.3.0)
