As the first subsection concludes (John 1:4–8), John moves from describing Creation to presenting the cosmic background. Two opposing forces are introduced: light and darkness. They are personified, for there is an enemy operating in the shadows of the story just as God operates in the light. The struggle between light and darkness appears often within this Gospel book (i.e., 3:19–21; 8:12; 11:9, 10; 12:35, 46; 13:2, 27).

John 1:17 clearly states that the Creator, Jesus Christ, has entered creation. In verse 18, we first encounter the metaphor of Father and Son, portraying the intimacy between the Word and God. The Son being in the Father’s bosom illustrates tender familiarity. Here is the reason for the incarnation: so the Word can make God known in a world dark with misunderstanding. Only One who has been with the Father from eternity past can give this authoritative revelation.

This foreshadowing is reflected in John’s statement that Jesus manifested His glory at the wedding (2:11). Glory is an important theme in this book (1:14; 12:27, 28; 17:1–4). In what way can Jesus’ death be considered glorious? Glory relates to a revelation—an unfolding of God’s character and presence in this world (Exod. 24:15–18; 34:29–35; 40:34–38). In the abundant gift of the wine, we see God’s desire and willingness to bless our lives. This miracle, far from being trivial, demonstrates His unlimited supply of grace (John 1:16).

For the Jews living in Jesus’ time, the temple in Jerusalem symbolized the hope and greatness of Israel. In John 2:19, Jesus spoke metaphorically, comparing His body to the temple. As the Word incarnate, Jesus is the new temple. He reveals God dwelling among humanity. Just after Jesus cleansed the temple, His words were mistakenly applied to the temple building (John 2:18–21). Those engaged in conversation with Him focused on how the temple was constructed, forming the basis of their critique of Jesus. They misunderstood Jesus’ words and didn’t realize that He was actually referring to His body as the temple. (John frequently gave his readers insights that the people in the Gospel didn’t have.) Jesus’ response referenced the demand for signs. Jesus foreshadowed that the greatest sign would be His death, burial, and resurrection. However, another, more personal lesson is at work here. In verse 22, from his vantage point after the resurrection, John explained the deeper meaning of this exchange. His experience was much like ours as we read the Gospel in the twenty-first century. We can all reflect on Christ’s life after His resurrection. Simply telling the narrative of Christ’s life wasn’t enough for John. He was predominately concerned with how past events become alive in the believer’s life. As we remember and retell the story of Christ, we engage with the Word made flesh, the revelation of God in humanity.

As Jesus expanded the audience, Nicodemus faded from the conversation, full of wonder (3:9). This leaves us uncertain as to how much he understood, though we do know that as a Pharisee, he certainly would’ve recognized the illustration of Moses lifting the serpent (vv. 14, 15). Indeed, at Jesus’ death, the “light from that secret interview illumined the cross upon Calvary, and Nicodemus saw in Jesus the world’s Redeemer” (Ellen G. White, The Desire of Ages [1898], 177). Only as we contemplate the crucifixion can we understand Jesus’ words about new life. When Jesus laid down His life (John 10:18), He made it possible for us to experience eternal life.
