Pull Request Description
I edited the query_by_values and vals_to_series methods so that they don't handle the parameter instance_vals of types pd.DataFrame or str. I did this by removing conversion from these types to pd.Series.
After creating the pull request: in order to pass the release_notes_updated check you will need to update the "Future Release" section of
docs/source/release_notes.rstto include this pull request.
