24.711: The Modern History of Modal Logic

A graduate course in Philosophical Logic at MIT covering the modern history of modal logic.

Description: The seminar will cover the modern history of modal logic, focusing on the development of both its proof theories and semantic systems. (1) The first module will begin with C.I. Lewis' systems of strict implication 1912 - 1932, focusing on the early motivations and interpretations. The module will conclude with Ruth Barcan Marcus' first-order extensions of the systems of strict implication 1946 and the objections raised by Quine 1943 - 1953 that modal logic will lead back into the "jungle of Aristotelian metaphysics". (2) The second module will focus on the development of intensional semantics by comparing Carnap 1946 and Kripke's 1963 accounts. We will then consider Prior 1967 and Thomason's 1970 tense logics and some of the attempts to fit these semantic systems together by Montague 1973 and Kaplan 1989. This module will conclude with an alternative bimodal system that I am developing. (3) The third module will begin with the intensional semantics for counterfactuals developed by Stalnaker 1968 and Lewis 1973. We will then move to review some of the early criticisms by Fine 1975 and others, comparing the hyperintensional account that Fine 2012 offers as an alternative. I will then present the extension that I have developed of Fine's semantics for counterfactuals, extending this system further to accommodate tensed counterfactuals. (4) The fourth module will close by considering hyperintensional semantic theories more generally and their logics for propositional identity, subject-matter, essence, ground, and logical subtraction.

The seminar will be held in the Stata Building, room 32-D831 at MIT on Mondays from 2-5pm.

The seminar will be divided into the four modules indicated below.

The readings for each week will be provided below and accessible on the private repository for the seminar. Please send me an email from the address that you used to sign into GitHub to gain access (you will need a GitHub account). Readings for each week will be arranged chronologically where primary readings will be in bold.

Students taking the course for credit may choose between the formal track which fulfills the logic requirement and the historical track which does not. Add a star to this repository so that I can see who is taking the course for credit.

Each week will have a file for notes which I will populate in advance of each class. Presenters for each week will be asked to contribute to revising these notes to include their presentation topics.

Although optional for the historical track I will be revising and expanding these Logic Notes for this course. The material presented here will not be the focus of the seminar meetings, though certain core topics relevant to both tracks will be covered in an accessible manner. If you are looking for further background in propositional and first-order logic, the ForAllX textbook provides an introduction (see Chapter 0 for a brief introduction to the subject-matter of logic, describing what it is that logic aims to study).

Grades for the seminar will be calculated as follows:

Historical Track

  • [10%] Present a topic in class, revising the class notes for that week
  • [10%] Open five issues in this repo to post a substantial question or comment
  • [80%] Write a final term paper (5k words)

Formal Track

  • [10%] Present a topic in class, revising the class notes for that week
  • [10%] Open five issues in this repo to post a substantial question or comment
  • [40%] Make contributions to all eight collaborative problem sets
  • [40%] Complete and present a final project by either:
    • Presenting and discussing an important formal result
    • Using the model-checker to implement a semantics
    • Other projects with approval

In addition to the weekly readings, the problem sets will draw from the Logic Notes (changes are underway). It will be important to be able to push and pull changes with Git so that I can see your contributions to the eight collaborative problem sets (details on how to do this is covered in the first problem set).

Tooling

Although optional for the historical track, the first problem set for students on the formal track will consist of:

  • Installing either VSCodium, NeoVim, or equivalent for writing in markdown, LaTeX, as well as using the model-checker to complete the final problem sets at the end of the course (instructions will be provided).
  • Install LaTeX on your machine if you have not already done so.
  • Use Git to push changes to the private repository, adding an SSH key as needed.

This is a great opportunity for upgrading you tool kit, gaining some experience using Git to collaborate if you have not done so before. No prior experience is required.

Presentations

In class presentations differ from the presentation of a final project for the formal track.

The presentations in class may consist of leading a discussion about a particular topic or paper or presenting the outline of a formal result of general significance in an accessible way. I have begun to gather papers for two potential topics to present in week 1. Presenters for each week will also be responsible for contributing to the class notes for that week.

Module 1: Modal Logic

This module focuses on the advantages and limitations of the purely syntactic approaches to modal logic inspired by Principia Mathematica as well as the challenge of interpreting the modal operators that the early pioneers faced.

Problem Set #1: Tooling (due prior to class week 01)

This week will present the ambitions for this seminar before presenting the system of material implication developed in Principia Mathematica and Lewis' early essays motivating the development of a logic of strict implication by appealing to the paradoxes of material implication.
