Darn Tough, a Vermont-based sock manufacturer, strives to align its operations with the 2030 target set by its largest retailer, Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI). Specifically, this target is to achieve a 55% reduction in total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from a 2019 baseline level by 2030. This project aims to help Darn Tough identify critical points in their supply chain, make effective strategies for reducing GHG emissions, and enable the company to continue enhancing and promoting its sustainable brand.
- Builds a model to calculate the emissions across different variables and data inputs that exist within Darn Tough’s supply chain
- Develops an interactive application that calculates and visualizes emissions for multiple years and scopes
- Runs scenario analyses with different fiber types, to pinpoint where changes in material mix can lead to the greatest reductions
- Provides recommendations for reducing GHG emissions in Darn Tough's supply chain and improving its sustainability efforts
- Emission_model, which contains the updated model used to calculate emissions
- carbonSOCKprint-Shiny, which contains the interactive dashboard
This project was completed by the carbonSOCKprint team in the 2024 Master of Environmental Data Science cohort at the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management. The team members for this project were Annaliese Adams, Carly Caswell, Linus Ghanadan, and Flora Hamilton. This project was advised by Dr. Enze Jin, and was in conjunction with Kristen Graf from Darn Tough Vermont.
