Editorial and Methodological Criteria

This project aims to present Marian apparitions throughout history in a historical, documented, and transparent manner, without devotional judgment, fully respecting the authority and discernment processes of the Catholic Church.

Fundamental Principles

1. Transparency

   • All historically documented apparitions may be displayed, including non-recognized cases.
   • The level of ecclesiastical authority is always made explicit.

2. Hierarchy of the Church

   • The Catholic Church is hierarchical by nature.
   • Local recognitions, ongoing investigations, and decisions by the Holy See carry distinct levels of authority.

3. Primary Sources Only

   • Only official sources are used:
     • Documents published by the Holy See (vatican.va)
     • Official diocesan decrees, notes, and communications
   • Secondary sources (articles, blogs, encyclopedias) are not used as canonical references.

Levels of Authority (authorityLevel)

• holy_see
  Apparitions with explicit documentation issued by the Holy See.

• diocesan_approved
  Apparitions formally recognized by local episcopal authority.

• under_investigation
  Cases currently under formal investigation by the Church, with no definitive judgment.

• not_recognized
  Cases examined by ecclesiastical authority and not recognized as supernatural.

lastReviewedByChurch Field

Indicates the year of the most recent known official ecclesiastical position regarding the apparition.

This may correspond to:

• A formal decree
• A pastoral note
• A document issued by the Holy See

If no formal review is known or documented, this field may be set to null.

The inclusion of an apparition in this atlas does not imply devotional approval.

Indica o ano do último posicionamento oficial conhecido da autoridade eclesial competente.

• Pode representar:
