Getting Started

1. Sign up for an OSM account. You'll have to confirm your account via email.
2. Log into OSM with your account.
3. Take the OSM tour. If you still aren't comfortable with Open Street Map, ask for help or check out learnosm.org

Task 1 - Fix Existing Schools

1. Using the task manager map, click on a problem school POI to view its popup.
2. Click "edit with osm." A new window will open and take you to the open street map editor
3. Use the School Editing Checklist below to make the necessary edits.
4. Once finished, return to the task manager map, click "edit" on the lower right hand corner of the school's popup, and changed the "fixed" value to "yes." The school point should turn green.
5. Move on to the next problem school POI.

Task 2 - Add Missing Schools

1. Comparing the APS school list (or use a printed copy) and and the list of schools already in OSM according to overpass turbo.* Confused? Hit ctrl-F on the page and start typing the name of a school to see if it's already in OSM.
2. In a different window, open OSM and start an edit session
3. Use the OSM search bar to look for the name of the school. If there is a point for it in osm, great! If there isn’t a point for it osm, add a point for it.
4. Now that the school has a point, use the School Editing Checklist below to add the school POI and its associated components
5. Once you're finished, add the school name to the list of schools in OSM

School Editing Checklist

Missing Attributes

• Is the school POI in the center of the school grounds?

• Does the school POI have a name? and is this an existing school? if yes, move on. if no, delete it. not sure? check the APS website or the printed school directory

• Does the school POI have an address tag? a contact:phone tag? a contact:website? if no, add them.

Missing School Grounds Polygon

• Does the school POI have a polygon around the school grounds? if yes, does the polygon have a tag of “building=school” instead of “amenity=school?” if so, change it to have “amenity=school.” if the school POI doesn't have a polygon (amenity=school) around the school grounds, draw one

• Add tags to school polygon: name, address, contact: phone, contact: website, amenity

Finishing Touches (for all schools)

• Are their buildings missing from the map that you know exist? if yes, draw them in and add the tag "building=school" along with a name if you know it

• Does the school have a parking lot that isn’t on the map? if yes, draw them in and add an tag amenity=parking

• Does the school have a sports field that is missing from the map? if yes, draw them in and give them tags for leisure = pitch, surface=grass
