The core sanitization function that handles different data types:

Strings: Escapes the string using escape() function
Dictionaries: Recursively sanitizes all values while preserving keys
Lists: Recursively sanitizes all elements
None values: Returned as-is
Other types (numbers, booleans): Returned unmodified

Key features:

Skips first argument by default (typically the test context)
Returns same data type as input
Recursive handling of nested structures
Error-safe with fallback to original value
