- start picking well inside such a uniform area, as when you first place the picker's starting point, darktable automatically selects an area _around_ that point; if this area contains pixels whose tonality differs substantially from those in the area you intend to pick, the initial average, the pivot will be shifted based on that initial measurement;
- when activating the picker for the first time, the whole image will be selected by darktable, adjusting the pivot based on the whole image. To work around this, select the area you intend to use for the pivot adjustment, then deactivate the picker. If you started from the default pivot position (0 EV input mapped to 18% output), double-click the sliders to reset them; otherwise, press Ctrl+Z a few times, until your previous pivot values are restored (each mouse movement must be undone separately). Now activate the picker again; since the selection is restored to what you selected, the picker will read the correct area.
