News Testing

Background and Purpose

The purpose of news testing is to test and evaluate how different subjects react to different aspects of news stories and how news is conveyed. This is separate from user testing as it focuses on the presentation of news and how to optimise it based on different audiences. This is a crucial aspect of the assignment as even if we develop an amazing idea, it will fall short if we do not allow it to be accessible to audiences that will continue to use it further. Our current issue is that we have found that the main interest in our website comes from a focus group that already looks at multiple sources and is willing to put time into verifying their sources. Unfortunately, this is usually a niche user base in other sites and it would be beneficial to seek to appeal to a wider audience while still maintaining our main uses.

Testing Process

The test was conducted by gathering multiple subjects in an online chatroom. From then, I read on the name of an article and a description for the group to discuss and decide whether the news story is real or fake.

Evaluation

Some articles were obvious fakes though participants enjoyed imagining the reality of obviously false stories and even enjoyed the discussion of hypothetical related to these false realities. The inclusion of Trump made the answers to related questions questionable due to his unpredictable nature. This led to associating Donald Trump with outrageous news. Some participants were already aware of certain questions while others were not. All participants were skeptical of a comeback for 're-education camps' but expressed that if they did come back, the would expect the Chinese regime to be the users of them. Most participants expressed disbelief in the truth of this issue and wanted to know more about the issue after having the truth of the matter confirmed to them. Participants expressed that Kanye West was a name that was also associated with weird news but said that the news story was too unrealistic. However. participants were more interested in the topic when it was revealed that it wasn't entirely false and that Kanye has changed his name to Ye instead. This could be applied to other news stories to trigger a similar reaction. The participants were relatively reticent on issues that involved divisive opinions as to possibly avoid offending anyone else in the group.

Summary/Decisions

Real or Fake would be an effective module to include due to the ability to entertain users while still informing them of world news and current events in an effective way.
