This release modifies the way splits (formatting options) are determined for each pair of consecutive non-whitespace tokens, from a large match statement to a handful of lookups. This has led to a speedup of about 35% in our tests.

I would like to volunteer on these kinds of trivial issues and help guide them through. Is there any way I could become some kind of maintainer as well?

I would actually be fine starting with a restriction to just apply dependabot-type changes, so the power is somewhat limited, as I might not quite be ready yet to fulfill greater tasks. But easy stuff like patches is limited in scope and therefore something easier to consider.
