Talk #1: Eddie Rafols - An Introduction to Microsoft LUIS: Getting from Text to Actions

Microsoft Language Understanding Intelligence System(LUIS) is a cloud-based service that extracts meaning from natural language queries. This presentation will provide an overview on how the service works and demonstrates how to set up a basic LUIS app that is accessible via REST API.

Speaker Bio:

Eddie (JR) Rafols is a software development lead at a NexOne where he acts as a full-stack developer (C# and JavaScript). JR has a B.Sc. and M.Sc in Computing Science with a specialization in Machine Learning. Over the course of his career, he has spent time working with all stages of the software development lifecycle across multiple industries.

Talk #2: Timothy Klenke - Seq

Are you tired of using Notepad’s Ctrl+F feature on your log files to try to find what you are looking for? In this talk, I’ll show how structured logging and Seq can be used to solve the mysteries of micro services and data analytics.

Speaker Bio:

Timothy is an Edmonton based developer current working at Process Solutions Canada Limited. He helps develop software to assist with the loading of bulk cement powder. Truck drivers use this software via a touch screen to lower spouts into trucks, start process flow valves, and print bills of lading with full backend integration to various ERP systems. His software is running at installations across 5 continents.

Timothy graduated from the U of A with a Bachelors of Computing Science in 1998. He is an evangelist for Clean Code and best practices. He works hard at developing small tools, code libraries, and process improvements that help boost his team’s productivity. He hopes he can share some of this with you.
