Emerging Citizens is a suite of digital multiplayer games that teaches students how to critique and create civic media.
- A modular, digital platform that allows for self-contained experiences to be played in classrooms, after school programs, and community gatherings.
- Each game teaches critical thinking skills revolving around media literacy and media criticism in fun, competitive ways.
- The platform will be accompanied by activity guides and curriculum materials to help educators connect the games to real-world skill-sets and pressing cultural issues.
As of 10.24.16, we have completed a functional MVP of Emerging Citizens which includes three unique games! Click here to find our product homepage
All of our codebase is open source, and you can find our developed Learning Games Core. This codebase uses socket.io technology (similar to Jackbox games) that allows up to 8 players to connect and play together using any internet connected device.
This section outlines our technical specifications and resources needed to launch an alpha version, a beta version, and a public ready testable version. This includes labor resources, technologies needed to fufill the project objectives, and a critical review of how we will build out the digital platform.
This section details a loose milestone based timeline that coordinates design and development in order to keep on track of the project.
This section will outline the branding and graphic design elements of the platform. This includes an asset list, mood board, and design statement.
##Content Archiving (UPDATE: This feature is iceboxed) This section outlines our approach to providing users with access to content created in the game. This system will allow for teachers and students to review and compare achievements and content across sessions, classrooms, schools, cities, and states. This system was scoped, wire framed, and roadmapped, but was put on hold due to requiring further funding.
Because Emerging Citizens is composed of self contained digital games, below is a list of all games and their descriptions. Clicking on the title of the game will take you to the game design document for each self contained game. The three games below are considered to be the final versions of games produced and released as of 10.24.16
Wait, Wait Don't MEME ME is a meme generation voting game that gives players a topic, asks them to make a meme about that topic, and then vote on which player’s meme best describes the revealed description.
Hashtag You’re It! is a twitter based bluffing game where players read real tweets with hidden hashtags, submit their own hashtag to fool other players, and then attempt to select the real hashtag themselves without getting fooled by others.
WikiGeeks is a realtime race played within Wikipedia.org that gives players a topic, asks them to choose a starting page, and then race to be the first player to reach a revealed wikipedia page only using hyperlinks.
This section outlines some additional games and brainstorming we did at the start of this design process. Two of these games have been prototyped, but never passed design sustainability. Other ideas are result of brainstorming, but never reached the prototyping stage.
