1.16.0 drag & drop checklist behaviour

Regarding the 1.16.0 update—specifically the checklist drag-and-drop improvements referenced here:

• Continue improving checklist drag and drop experience, you can now drag an item into another one without soo much hassle and the dropzones in between items should be clearer, also mobile drag and drop usage is slightly improved (it was already pretty decent to be fair) [FEATURE]: Quick edits (text and sub-items) #302

I personally find the new behavior more cumbersome than the previous implementation. While creating sub-items is now extremely easy, (perhaps too easy) simple reordering has become noticeably more difficult. Reordering requires dragging to a very precise position where the solid blue indicator appears, whereas previously much less precision was needed to change item order.

Because nested checklists are less important to my workflow than fast and fluid reordering, this change feels like a regression in usability for my use case. I’d like to respectfully suggest considering an option to adjust this behavior—perhaps a setting to enable/disable nested drag behavior, or a clearer separation between “reorder” and “nest” interactions.

Thanks for the continued work on improving the app—this is just feedback from a workflow-focused perspective.

Frankly? I agree!

I am gonna sort this out for the next release, sorry about that, I keep finding myself messing up the drag and drop and it's driving me mad, actually.

Leave it with me, hopefully you'll get on with it for a couple of days until I make it more usable

I live for this stuff. It's not possible to be bothered by it :)

I've tested the latest develop image. Unfortunately on my end, I'm still experiencing some issues.
I've tested in Chrome and Firefox on windows and Android, also with the PWA for Android.
It doesn't seem like the 700ms is doing anything on my end. Regardless of how quickly I drag and drop, if I'm not right along the far left edge, the note will get nested. I can get pretty aggressive with the reordering. Swiping fast and sometimes flicking. V1.15 seemed to handle whatever kind of mood I was in and just organized everything perfectly.
Here, I have to be very intentional otherwise I get a nested item.
Also, the swipe left or right issue seems to still be evident. This still deletes the list item. Sometimes if I drag the note to the right it opens the sidebar.

I've tried clearing the browser cache, re-installing the app, always the same result.

It starts showing the drag and drop issues I'm seeing and ends with the items being deleted if they're dragged to the left or right.

What version are you on? Can you check the login screen or admin overview?

I can guarantee that's an old version as the bottom bar is not present anymore in the checklist page @DaxtonD

The latest version (on mobile) gives you the entire page to play with, in your video I see both input and menu bar!!!! This is why you are experiencing the issue still, I believe

To confirm, could you please try the checklist behaviour on https://demo.jotty.page ? As it's definitely on the latest version

When using this image the version that appears in my application is 1.16.2

I tested the demo page and it does seem slightly better, but I still find it's really easy to accidentally nest an item.

Is the swipe left/right-to-delete a feature? For me, it seems natural to swipe left to un-nest an item and it ends up being removed.

I’m honestly not sure what’s going on on my end, but I’m still seeing the same behavior after trying pretty much everything I can think of.

I’ve updated to the latest :develop image on Unraid and the issues are still there. I also tested the public demo page and saw the exact same problems. To rule out browser weirdness, I tried multiple browsers (including Opera), but that didn’t change anything. I even pulled the :latest tag just to be sure it wasn’t something specific to :develop, and it behaves the same way.

At one point I wondered if this might be something I messed up in my Unraid setup. I originally made my own template from scratch, so I completely removed Jotty and reinstalled it using the XML template from your repo. While doing that, I did notice a few issues in the template, which I fixed and opened a PR for — feel free to take a look when you get a chance. That might also explain why it wasn’t getting picked up by Unraid CA.

After reinstalling everything, I’m still running into the same issues. I’ve attached another video showing what I’m seeing:

Nesting still happens very easily, even when I’m just trying to reorder items.

Dragging left or right still deletes the note.

Dragging an entire nested list ends up deleting the whole list.

At this point I’m starting to wonder if this is environment-related. What setup are you testing on (OS, browser, input method)? Windows vs Linux, Firefox vs Chromium, etc. I’d love to try to match your setup as closely as possible and see if I can reproduce things the same way you’re seeing them.

Oh wow that is EXTREMELY buggy, I'll fire up my old windows machine and see if I can get it to that state, I definitely managed to replicate a few of these issues after seeing your video, they just don't happen with as much ease as they do for you, so I hadn't noticed them at all

Sorry, I'm really trying to get this right, it's a bit of a tough cookie but we'll get there.

Feel free to test the latest :develop image (1.17.2) which should have a fix for everything you showed in that video, I managed to replicate it ALL on browserstack and I know what the issue was, it still can be replicated on mac but it's a little harder to achieve, not sure why. The items were being added within themselves (ooops) and error was deleting it itself.

I also made waiting for the delay mandatory now, so if you drop into another item without waiting for the delay it won't nest it.

Ultimately swiping left does nothing (as intended) and I really don't want to add a functionality to unnest with swipe left, not for now at least.

I'll release at some point tonight/tomorrow, but if you manage to test before then let me know, these checklists bug you found are a huge issue and I don't want it to be in Jotty for too long.

Nice work — I’ve been testing the latest develop tag and it’s awesome! 👍
Everything looks great overall, and I’m down to just one remaining issue.

On desktop browsers, behavior is perfect.
On the mobile app, when a list item is selected and dragged to the right, it also triggers the side panel to slide into view.

My thought is that if the list item’s drag handle is actively being grabbed and moved, that gesture shouldn’t trigger the side panel at the same time.

Also, I updated the Unraid template and opened a pull request for it.
Have a look when you get a chance and let me know if you think anything else should be adjusted.

That triggering of the side panel should not happen, I noticed it while shopping the other day and added it to my backlog :) I'll get it sorted
