Summary of Changes

Hello @julieqiu, I'm Gemini Code Assist1! I'm currently reviewing this pull request and will post my feedback shortly. In the meantime, here's a summary to help you and other reviewers quickly get up to speed!

This pull request removes unnecessary calls to the prepareLibrary function within the bump.go file. These calls were previously used in conjunction with the generate command, which is no longer part of the bump process. Removing these calls simplifies the code and eliminates redundant operations.

Highlights

  • Removal of prepareLibrary calls: The prepareLibrary function calls have been removed from both runBump and the loop within bumpAll in internal/librarian/bump.go.
  • Rationale for removal: As stated in the PR description, the prepareLibrary function is no longer needed within the bump process because the generate command is no longer executed in that context.

Code Review

This pull request removes what appears to be an unnecessary call to prepareLibrary from the bump command's workflow. While this is a good simplification, I've raised a concern that prepareLibrary might have essential side effects, such as creating library output directories, that bumpLibrary may depend on. Removing this call without ensuring those prerequisites are met elsewhere could lead to runtime failures. I've added comments to highlight this potential issue.

I am having trouble creating individual review comments. Click here to see my feedback.

internal/librarian/bump.go (146-149)

Removing the call to prepareLibrary could introduce a bug if bumpLibrary relies on its side effects. For example, language-specific bump implementations (e.g., for Rust) write to the library's output directory but may not create it themselves. If prepareLibrary was responsible for ensuring this directory exists, its removal could cause bumpLibrary to fail. Please ensure that all prerequisites for bumpLibrary are still met after this change.

We don't have any reason to run prepareLibrary inside bump anymore since we no longer run generate this in command.

But other language-specific code used to bump version numbers may well want the same information, no?
