The focus of this is IDG for Ubuntu. I'm happy that we have a blog post in progress about IDG for Linux, but I was expecting to see it be about IDG for Docker and the EC2 Container Service. Perhaps that can come next.

I have some comments on IDG for Linux on AWS:

The diagrams should be referenced with the ![description](media/filename.jpg) format so that markdown editors and converters can properly render them.

The DataPower Available Form Factors image is old, and refers to the 7.5.0 view of the world instead of the 7.5.2. There is a significant difference in that 7.5.0 had docker support that was very preliminary whereas 7.5.2 makes that first-class, but it also invalidates the last column. Also, what was called "Cloud" before is now "Linux". @ozairs can get you the current image.

We should not advise that people set up DataPower web-mgmt on the open internet. I suggest a ssh-based approach approach with either dynamic forwarding or port forwarding for port 9090.

Under Signing on to the Ubuntu instance, there's a tension because the assumption is that the reader has not done this before. But there are people and organizations out there who have established procedures that are more robust than what we're offering. Perhaps some guidance to skip this section for such users.

There's a lot of discussion about setting up SSH keys in Ubuntu. I think that this should start with using the Key Pairs as described in the AWS console. There's a lot of time spent discussing internals of ssh that perhaps could be eliminated if we take this approach.

Simplify Uploading the .deb Files by recommending that they just scp or sftp them to their instance. They've already set up ssh, it seems silly to ask for another way to do the transfer.

There should be some kind of what to do next. License still has to be accepted so we should talk them through how to connect to enable and connect to web-mgmt (through the tunnel). Perhaps import a configuration or clear guidance to the DataPower on-ramp.

We should also show some practices around mapping config:// and local:// to directories outside the secured DataPower filesystem. This is where the real opportunity for doing automated config lies.

I have also reviewed and provided my comments:

  • Like the fact that this tutorial shows our Linux edition on Amazon EC2, shows two core use cases
  • Per harley comment, lets test using the latest version of Linux
  • Remove the following, since we now plan to offer a free developer edition for Linux,

IBM also provides an Evaluation Licence for DataPower. This can be requested from your IBM Sales Rep; it allows you to download and use the software for up to 150 days free of charge (for evaluation purposes only).

  • rename images to media, so that the process to convert and upload to wordpress will run smoothly
  • rename the top level folder from HughEverett to a descriptive name, following the convention of lowercase with dashes
  • rename the markdown document to correspond with the folder name (ie descriptive)
