Welcome to Hack Into It Challenge!

Overview of the Challenge

Using expert advice and content from Intuit’s TurboTax blog, TurboTax AnswerXchange and TurboTax YouTube channel, build an app to help people understand tax implications of important life changes, specific to

  • Buying your first home,
  • Having your first baby,
  • and/or getting married.

The constraints are…your solution must have “built in” intelligence in the way it presents the content (considerations include how you categorize the content and how you would adjust the ranking of the content based on customer behavior) and it must be working code (not just a clickable prototype).

Details and Acceptance Criteria

How will people “find” this app? This novel app will be part of the user experience of those who visit sites like:

  • Theknot.com (from community page) – for those who are seeking financial advice or trying to understand tax implications around getting married
  • Thebump.com (from community page) – for those who are seeking financial advice or trying to understand tax implications around having their first baby.
  • Zillow.com or Thenest.com(from community page) for those who are seeking financial advice or trying to understand tax implications around buying their first home

Submit a working app with working code that…

  • Demonstrates “intelligence” in the way that the data is presented in each of these use cases – no hard-coded rules please
  • Categorizes the data
  • Showcases efficient and optimal use of the given data
  • Demonstrates quick response times for all user interactions
  • Demonstrates an intuitive user experience

Bonus criteria • Demonstrates usage of sophisticated natural language processing and data mining algorithms

Judging criteria

  • Team is optimally organized and leverages each person's strength
  • The solution makes use of appropriate data structure and algorithms...and the solution is also creative and novel (How creative was your algorithm? Is your solution new to the world?)
  • The user experience is simple and intuitive
  • Extra credit and bonus points - Demonstrates usage of sophisticated natural language processing and data mining algorithms

Submission point: All solutions/code submitted by 4 pm PST on 9/26

Individuals and teams submit their code here: https://github.com/Intuit-CTG

You will need to create a Github account (if you don’t already have one) and either send it to us ahead of time or at the start of the hackathon so that we can invite you to our private Github organization.

Presentations (4:30-6 pm on 9/26)

  • Individuals or teams who ‘pass’ acceptance criteria upon submission in Git (synch up to their master branch) will be asked to present their solution to set of judges
  • Individuals or teams has 7 min to “pitch” their solutions
