You might consider more ruff checks. I left a TODO in #102.

At the same time, I'd probably update python to >= 3.9, since that will change all your type hints.

I could submit a PR with ruff checks and auto-fixes after #102 is merged, if you wish. It's shallow changes to dozens of files.
