Escape From Grandma's House

Adaptation

This game was adapted from the Simpsons's episode 'Bart Gets an F.' A brief glimpse of the cartoon video game was shown, where the player was running away from Granda, only to get caught by mothballs. Using this scene, and various other context clues, we pieced together our iteration of the game.

Gameplay

The game's premise follows the ungrateful grandchild as they try to escape grandma's house without colliding into either grandma herself or the mothballs. The grandchild can use the F key to fire a total of 6 bullets after picking up the gun. Any shots that hit grandma will momentarily stun her. However, shooting the mothballs will reveal a heart. The player's objective is to collect all three hearts (from the mothballs), and successfully escape grandma's house. However, if the player collides with either the mothballs or grandma, they are stuck within the house.

Collisions & Animations

The collisions and animations of this game were deliberately "wonky" in spirit of the original "gameplay" presented within the episode. The movement of the characters as a result is limited to a few frames. Similarly, the collision detection works in a similar manner to recreate the original effect of the game.

Tutorial Scene

The tutorial provides the user information of the game's controls and informs them to avoid various obstacles, namely Grandma and the Mothballs, along their path. The only user inputs for player control in this game are the arrows keys and the F key. There are various other keys used specifically to transition into other scenes or to restart the game that are listed on the screen.

Assets

Most of the art assets was created by Isha Chury using pixilart.com and Photoshop, with the exception of any music assets. These assets were found in the following two websites: freesound.org and pixabay.com. There are a total of four sound effects used throughout the game, and one looping soundtrack. The credits for all of these are listed in the credits scene, which can be accessed by pressing the C key when the player has successfully escaped Grandma's house.

Phaser Components

Key Phaser components used within this game were the following: animations manager, tweens manager, timers, cameras, bitmap text, particle emitters, and the physics system. The animation and tweens manager are used for various animations within the game, most notably, the player's movements. Timers were used to gradually increase grandma's speed, as well as 'freeze' other animations until one specific animation (such as the grandchild struggling) has stopped playing. The camera component was used to transition between different levels. Bitmap text was used within the game to keep the same style of text from the game within our version. Though it's not an exact match to the original, it is similar in style, and contributes to the aesthetic. Particle effects were used to add hearts to scenes such as the main screen and the tutorial. This, similar to the bitmap text, contributed to the aesthetic of the game, rather than aspects of its functionality. The physics system was used most notably to create and detect collisions between the grandchild and various obstacles around it.
