Please feel free to review my branch that tries very hard to get the results similar to your results. It was a bit trickier than anticipated; turns out the default push behavior of UINavigationController "cheats", in that it only shifts the view of the parent VC slightly (approximately 80 pixels to the left, if my observations are correct)! Moreoever, preventing the background image to animate during the transition was key to get it looking more consistent (without the noticeable slide animation of the background image during the transition). But I'm sure you knew that already :)
