The task is to modify starter code to create an application called Note Taker that can be used to write and save notes. This application will use an Express.js back end and will save and retrieve note data from a JSON file.
The application’s front end has already been created. The goal is to build the back end, connect the two, and then deploy the entire application to Heroku.

Install Heroku CLI

- Click "Get Started" to open the note taker.
- Enter text into the 'title' and 'text' fields
- Click the save icon (top right) to save the note.
- Click the + icon (top right) to add another note.
- Additional: Click the trash icon to delete saved notes.

On the back end, the application should include a db.json
file that will be used to store and retrieve notes using the fs
module.
The following HTML routes should be created:

should receive a new note to save on the request body, add it to thedb.json
file, and then return the new note to the client. You'll need to find a way to give each note a unique id when it's saved (look into npm packages that could do this for you).
- I learned how create api routes and html routes.
- I learned direct deployment to Heroku from the integrated terminal command line interface.
- I refactored my entire code with inspiration from the following video tutorial by Thomas Calle: https://youtu.be/-UiqzvUe360
- After refactoring the code, I was able to eliminate the 500 status error on lines 37 & 46 of the index.js page (corresponding to the fetch requests) that I was getting when I tried to post or delete a note.
- The 500 status error was likely caused by the fact that I had not written correctly the code for the createNotes() and deleteNotes() functions.
- Within the createNotes() and deleteNotes() functions, I had attempted to assign unique ids to each note by using the index of the array. This was a failure.
- I also attempted to use the array splice() method to remove the note with the given id property. This was a failure.
- After failing to successfully resolve the issues with my createNotes() and deleteNotes() functions as well as the array both on my own and with the assistance of a tutor, I implemented the uuid npm package to generate unique ids for each note rather than using the index of the array.
- I reorganized the folders and some of the file locations to make the file paths cleaner.
- I added a new folder called "routes" and created two new files: html_routes.js and api_routes.js.
- I wanted to separate the api and html routes from the server.js file so that the code would be easier to read and maintain.

You haven’t learned how to handle DELETE requests, but this application offers that functionality on the front end. As a bonus, try to add the DELETE route to the application using the following guideline:
DELETE /api/notes/:id
should receive a query parameter that contains the id of a note to delete. To delete a note, you'll need to read all notes from thedb.json
file, remove the note with the givenid
property, and then rewrite the notes to thedb.json
file.
