Edimax-IC-3015Wn

Information collected about Edimax IC-3015Wn wifi camera.

Local machine used was Gentoo Linux.

Hardware

  • RTL8196C SoC (380Mhz MIPS (RLX4181) core).
  • 32MB RAM
  • 4MB SPI Flash
  • SuYin 1.3Mpixel camera (on USB 2.0 bus).
  • 100Mbps LAN
  • WiFi (802.11b/g/n)

Serial interface

TTL (3.3V) serial interface (38400 8N1) is present on TP6 (RX) ant TP8 (TX) testpoints (RTL8196C pins 36 and 37 routed to the opposite PCB side). GND can be attached to any ground pin (eg. grounded pins of LAN connector).

Debricking

Hold reset button while attaching power. Camera enters RealTek bootloader and sets LAN interface IP to 192.168.1.6. Set Your PC IP to 192.168.1.2. Bootloader does not respond to ICMP (ping), You can check connection using ARP packets (replace ethX with Your LAN interface name):

arping -I ethX 192.168.1.6

Firmware (kernel) is uploaded via TFTP:

tftp -m binary -v 192.168.1.6 -c put kernel_v1.11

You can see something like this on serial:

<RealTek>
**TFTP Client Upload, File Name: kernel_v1.11
-
**TFTP Client Upload File Size = F8012 Bytes at 80500000

Success!
<RealTek>
Linux kernel (root-fs) upgrade.
checksum Ok !
burn Addr =0x10000! srcAddr=0x80500000 len =0xf8012
................................................................................................................
Flash Write Successed!

Bootloader receives file to RAM at 0x80500000, then flashes it to 0x10000 and reboots.

It seams kernel and rootfs need to be uploaded separately.

I've only tried flashing kernel this way, and rootfs I've wrote manually to flash once received via TFTP using serial:

tftp -m binary -v 192.168.1.6 -c put rootfs_v1.11

Serial:

<RealTek>
**TFTP Client Upload, File Name: rootfs_v1.11
-
**TFTP Client Upload File Size = 213003 Bytes at 80500000

Success!

<RealTek>flw 00110000 80500000 213003
Write 0x213003 Bytes to SPI flash#1, offset 0x110000<0xbd110000>, from RAM 0x80500000 to 0x80713003

Firmware

The following applies to v1.11 firmware.

$ ls -l IC-3015Wn_v1.11.bin ; md5sum IC-3015Wn_v1.11.bin
-rw-r--r-- 1 edimax edimax 3223683 2014-04-29 IC-3015Wn_v1.11.bin
282a1f4030696029ba8d008b465e7e25  IC-3015Wn_v1.11.bin

Kernel (suitable for authomatic TFTP flashing):

dd if=IC-3015Wn_v1.11.bin of=kernel_v1.11 bs=1 skip=128 count=1015826

RootFS (without headers):

dd if=IC-3015Wn_v1.11.bin bs=1 skip=1048704 of=rootfs_v1.11

Produced file is SuqshFS image with LZMA compression. To extract it:

unsquashfs rootfs_v1.11

Expected result:

-rw-r--r-- 1 edimax edimax 1015826 2017-09-28 23:36 kernel_v1.11
-rw-r--r-- 1 edimax edimax 2174979 2017-09-28 23:38 rootfs_v1.11
MD5(kernel_v1.11)= bd0df7c9eb8e954a86cc5e560746d096
MD5(rootfs_v1.11)= ff83ddf1e8a1e30340094db57de2b3b4

Compatible firmware

Edimax IC3115W seams to have compatible firmware (IC-3115W v2.03 firmware works on IC-3015Wn). Flashed via TFTP/serial.
