Split/merge training tends to take an order of magintude more time than it used to with an earlier version (from March 2018). Investigate what change caused the slow-down!

Maybe it is just that OpenMP is disabled?!

Maybe it is just that OpenMP is disabled?!
This is very likely the reason, because the backend code only changed in aspects that should not effect training speed.
