MXL SDK - Media eXchange Layer

Version License Python

Production-ready proof of concept Python SDK for software-defined broadcast production. Built on the Media eXchange Layer (MXL) concept from the EBU, this SDK provides comprehensive transport protocols, broadcast codecs, adaptive streaming, and frame synchronization for modern broadcast workflows.

Overview

MXL SDK solves interoperability challenges in software-based broadcast production by providing:

  • Zero-copy media exchange via shared memory ring buffers
  • Professional transport protocols including SRT, ZIXI, NDI, and ST 2110
  • Broadcast-quality codecs including JPEG-XS, V210, TICO, and OPUS
  • Adaptive streaming with HLS/DASH and SCTE-35 support
  • Frame synchronization with genlock and PTP
  • GPU acceleration with CUDA and Vulkan
  • Cloud-native Kubernetes orchestration
  • NMOS-compatible discovery and registration

This implementation follows concepts from the EBU's Dynamic Media Facility (DMF) initiative.

Installation

Basic Installation

System Requirements

Quick Start

1. Check System Capabilities

python examples/advanced_pipeline.py check

This shows available RDMA devices, GPUs, Vulkan support, and codecs.

2. Start the Orchestrator
