Case Study 1: Divvy's Speedy Success

In this case study, I worked for a fictional company, Divvy, along with some key team members. To answer the business questions, I followed the steps of the Data Analysis Process:

Scenario

Stakeholders at Divvy, a bike-share company in Chicago, believe Divvy's future success depends on maximizing the number of yearly memberships. Therefore, my team wants to understand how casual riders and yearly members use Divvy bikes differently. Based on these insights, the Marketing Director will design a new marketing strategy to convert casual riders into annual members. However, Divvy executives must first approve my recommendations, so I must back them up with compelling data insights and professional data visualizations.

Stakeholders

The stakeholders in this case study are Divvy's marketing director and executive team. The marketing director is responsible for developing campaigns and initiatives to promote Divvy, which may include email, social media, and other marketing channels. The notoriously detail-oriented executive team is a group of stakeholders that will decide whether to approve the recommended marketing program.

About the Company

Divvy is a bike-share program with over 5,800 bicycles and 600 docking stations. It is making bike-share more inclusive to riders who can't use a standard two-wheeled bicycle and people with disabilities. Most riders opt for traditional bikes, while about 8% use the assistive options. Divvy users are more likely to ride for leisure, but about 30% use bikes to commute to work each day. Divvy is Chicagoland's bike share system and provides residents and visitors with convenient, fun, and affordable transportation options for getting around and exploring Chicago. Like other bike share systems, Divvy consists of a fleet of specially designed, sturdy, and durable bikes locked into a network of docking stations throughout the region. People can unlock the bikes from one station and return to any other station in the Divvy system and can use the bike share to commute to work or school, explore Chicago, get to appointments or social engagements, run errands, and more. Divvy is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, and is a program of the Chicago Department of Transportation (C.D.O.T.), which owns the city's bikes, stations, and vehicles. C.D.O.T.'s vision is to ensure that Chicago continues to be a vibrant international city, successfully competing in the global economy with a transportation system that provides high-quality service to residents, businesses, and visitors, a system that offers a solid foundation for the city, regional and national economies, yet is sensitive to its communities and environment. Lyft was founded in 2012 by Logan Green and John Zimmer to improve people's lives with the world's best transportation. In 2016, Divvy launched a successful bike-share offering, and since then, the program has grown to a fleet of over 5,000 bicycles tracked and locked into an expansive network of over 600 stations across Chicago. People can unlock the bikes from one station and return to any other station in the system anytime. Until now, Divvy's marketing strategy relied on building general awareness and appealing to broad consumer segments. Divvy's flexible pricing plans are One approach that helped make these things possible: single-ride passes, full-day passes, and yearly memberships. Divvy refers to Customers who purchase single-ride or full-day passes as casual riders. Customers who buy annual memberships are Divvy members. Divvy's finance analysts have concluded that yearly memberships are much more profitable than casual riders. Although the pricing flexibility helps Divvy attract additional customers, The Marketing Director believes that maximizing the number of annual members will be critical to future growth. She believes there is a solid opportunity to convert casual riders into yearly members and that that would be a better marketing campaign rather than creating a marketing campaign that targets all new customers. The marketing director notes that casual riders are already aware of the Divvy program and have chosen Divvy for their mobility needs. She has set a clear goal to design marketing strategies to convert casual riders into yearly members. To do that, Divvy needs to understand better how casual riders and yearly members differ, what would compel casual riders to buy a membership, and how digital marketing could affect their marketing tactics. The Marketing Director and her team want to analyze the Divvy historical bike trip data to identify trends.
