IOTASubstream is a payment system based on the IOTA cryptocurrency. Its main goal is to allow for repetitive, minute by minute micro-transactions, replacing conventional monthly/weekly subscription fee schemes. The intended result is that consumers can pay for the exact amount of service they are using. This prevents wasting money on regrettable subscriptions, and allows consumers to sample a service without having to commit to it. Example use cases include:
-
Media streaming services: The user only pays based on how much they have streamed. If they lose interest half way through a movie, they need only pay for half the movie.
-
Movie sharing websites: In place of annoying advertisements, users could pay for their time on the website on a minute by minute basis. This would greatly diminish the success of "clickbait" titles, and ensure that only worthwhile content is rewarded. Given that the money generated by a single ad view is minimal, this system could potentially also be very cheap for the end user.
-
Social media sites: IOTA payments could replace the "likes" system seen on most social networks with a very small tip (e.g. $0.05). This would incur a negligible cost on the user, while remaining as seamless as the click of a button. The result would hopefully be an increased standard of content quality, leading to an improved experience for all.
The IOTA cryptocurrency is ideal for this purpose thanks to its complete lack of transaction fees. This means money can change hands quickly and repeatedly without any losses. In addition, IOTA is designed from the ground up for the use-case of automated (AKA machine-to-machine) transactions, ensuring that the currency will remain perfectly suitable for this project as it develops.
