IIT-M Netaccess

This is a repository for the script automating IIT-M Netaccess.

Files

• netaccess.py

This is the python script file for the website blocker.

• netaccess.service

This is the unit file for running the python script as a system service and loading it at startup.

Installation Instructions (LINUX - UBUNTU and Debian Based Linux)

• Download the repository by executing following commands

cd ~/Downloads
git clone https://github.com/ornkkk/IIT-M-Netaccess.git
cd IIT-M-Netaccess

• Open the netaccess.py file and edit the following lines.

user = "Roll Number" #Replace with your roll number
pwd = "Password" #Replace with your password

• Change the user, pwd accordingly.

• Open netaccess.service and add the absolute path to the python script file to ExecStart parameter. By default the absolute path is /home/<user>/Downloads/IIT-M-Netaccess/netaccess.py

  ExecStart=/home/<user>/Downloads/IIT-M-Netaccess/netaccess.py
  

  Note: Replace <user> with your username.

• Give execute permissions to the script file

sudo chmod +x netaccess.py

• Add the unit file to the system services to automatically load at every startup

sudo cp netaccess.service /etc/systemd/system/
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
reboot

• After reboot you can see that the script file will be running automatically.

To run the script at a scheduled time

Execute the following commands

crontab -e

The terminal will ask for your preferred text editor as follows

Select an editor.  To change later, run 'select-editor'.
  1. /bin/nano        <---- easiest
  2. /usr/bin/vim.tiny
  3. /bin/ed

Select your preferred text editor and add the following line with necessary changes at the end of the file.

MIN HOUR DOM MON DOW ./home/<user>/Downloads/IIT-M-Netaccess/netaccess.py

MIN      Minute field    0 to 59
HOUR     Hour field      0 to 23
DOM      Day of Month    1-31
MON      Month field     1-12
DOW      Day Of Week     0-6
CMD      Command         Any command to be executed.

For example, If you want to run the script at 12:00PM Everyday, change the line to the following:

00 12 * * * ./home/<user>/Downloads/IIT-M-Netaccess/netaccess.py

Save the file and exit. Now the script will run at 12:00PM everyday(If your PC/Laptop is ON) and also at startup.
