What is this repository?
This repository defines ethical, licensing, and collaboration structures for independent inventors. It provides templates, guides, and a framework for protecting intellectual property without requiring expensive legal resources.
Repository Purpose:
The Phyllux Framework is a complete IP protection and licensing system designed for independent inventors who want to protect their inventions without expensive lawyers, share their work with researchers and educators (free tier), get fair compensation from companies, build community around shared innovation, defend together against patent trolls, and advance humanity while sustaining themselves.
Who is this for?
- Independent inventors seeking affordable IP protection
- Researchers and educators who want open access to innovation
- Companies interested in fair licensing terms
- Anyone exploring alternatives to traditional patent systems
How does this connect to other Phyllux repositories?
- biomimetic-inventions-public: Example implementation of this framework (Phyllux Mesh, Wave, Vault, Core)
- phyllux-inventions-wip: Work-in-progress inventions using this framework

STATUS.md- Repository state and roadmap
The Phyllux Framework is a complete IP protection and licensing system designed for independent inventors who want to:
- ✅ Protect their inventions without expensive lawyers
- ✅ Share their work with researchers and educators (free tier)
- ✅ Get fair compensation from companies that profit from their ideas
- ✅ Build community around shared innovation
- ✅ Defend together against patent trolls
- ✅ Advance humanity while sustaining themselves
This is not another license. This is a complete system that includes:
- Legal templates for establishing prior art
- 4-tier licensing model (Pioneer/Mission-Aligned/Commercial/Free)
- Guides for patent filing, negotiation, and community building
- Protection against exploitation
- Framework for fair compensation
The current system presents barriers:
- 💸 Patents cost $60K-130K to file (most inventors cannot afford this)
- 🏢 Small inventors often lack resources to enforce their rights
- 🧛 Patent trolls acquire patents and extract value without contributing
- 📜 Legal fees consume significant portions of licensing revenue
- 🤐 Confidentiality agreements can limit knowledge sharing
- ⚖️ Legal processes favor parties with greater resources
The result:
- Many inventors cannot afford protection
- Innovation may be locked away or underutilized
- Access to IP protection is limited by financial resources
- Society may miss beneficial innovations
The Phyllux Framework provides:
- 📝 Templates to establish prior art (blocks trolls, costs $0)
- 🤝 Tiered licensing (fair terms based on mission and resources)
- 🛡️ Collective defense (community protects each other)
- 💡 Open access for research (Tier 4 free for education)
- ⚖️ Ethical framework (rules against exploitation)
- 🌱 Sustainable income for inventors (royalties, not one-time buyouts)
- 🔬 You're an independent inventor with limited resources
- 🎓 You want to share your work with researchers/students
- 💰 You want fair compensation without maximum extraction
- 🤝 You believe in collaboration over competition
- 🌍 You want your invention to help humanity
- 🛡️ You need protection but can't afford $100K in legal fees
- 🏢 You work for a corporation (they have lawyers)
- 💸 You want maximum profit extraction (use traditional licensing)
- 🤐 You want to hide your invention (this requires public disclosure)
- ⚔️ You want to sue competitors (this is collaborative, not adversarial)
- 🧛 You're a patent troll (get out)

- ✅ Protected by copyright
- ✅ Available under fair licensing terms
- ✅ Ready for community engagement
The heart of Phyllux is the tiered approach where terms depend on mission and resources:
Who: Organizations pursuing civilization-scale missions
Examples: Multi-planetary ventures, human-AI symbiosis, safe AGI development
Terms: Minimal upfront fee ($5K-25K) + patent assistance = 0% royalties
Rationale: Mission success benefits humanity; support provided rather than extracting value
See also: phyllux-seed/tier-1-pioneer.md for detailed terms
Who: Organizations advancing human welfare
Examples: Medical device companies, climate technology, food security, education tech
Terms: $10K-100K upfront + 1-3% royalty (tiered by revenue) + improvement sharing
Rationale: Fair terms based on resources; shared prosperity model
See also: phyllux-seed/tier-2-mission.md for detailed terms
Who: For-profit companies
Examples: Consumer electronics, telecommunications, general commercial use
Terms: $100K-1M upfront + 3-5% royalty
Rationale: Market-rate compensation for commercial use
See also: phyllux-seed/tier-3-commercial.md for detailed terms
Who: Non-commercial use
Examples: Universities, researchers, students, hobbyists, personal projects
Terms: $0 (requires citation and attribution)
Rationale: Open access for research and education
See also: phyllux-seed/tier-4-free.md for detailed terms

Q: Is this a license like MIT or GPL?
A: No. This is a complete IP protection system that includes multiple documents and a tiered licensing model.
Q: Do I need a lawyer to use this?
A: No for basic setup. Yes for patent filing (or DIY if you're brave). See GETTING_STARTED.md for guidance.
Q: Does public disclosure destroy my patent rights?
A: Not in US/Canada (12-month grace period). Yes in most other countries. See phyllux-seed/prior-art-strategy.md for details.
Q: What if a company uses my tech without licensing?
A: You can pursue contract enforcement. See phyllux-seed/licensing-negotiation.md for guidance.
Q: Can I customize the tiers?
A: Yes! The templates are starting points. Adapt to your situation. Core philosophy should stay: fair terms based on mission and resources.
Q: What if Tier 1 companies don't respond?
A: Focus on Tiers 2-4. Build community, prove value, make them come to you.

Example implementation:
David Sproule has used this framework to protect biomimetic inventions (Phyllux Mesh, Wave, Vault, Core). See the biomimetic-inventions-public repository for a complete example.
Typical workflow:
- Inventor creates public disclosure using templates (establishes prior art, costs $0)
- Researcher uses invention for academic work (Tier 4: Free, with citation)
- Mission-aligned company licenses technology (Tier 2: Fair terms based on resources)
- Commercial company licenses for broader use (Tier 3: Market rates)
- Community benefits from open research access while inventor receives fair compensation
Key principles in practice:
- Prior art protection enables inventors to establish rights without upfront costs
- Tiered licensing allows access based on mission and resources
- Open research access accelerates innovation
- Fair compensation supports sustainable inventor livelihoods
- Community coordination provides collective defense
