What is changed, added or deleted? (Required)

Which TiDB version(s) do your changes apply to? (Required)

Tips for choosing the affected version(s):

By default, CHOOSE MASTER ONLY so your changes will be applied to the next TiDB major or minor releases. If your PR involves a product feature behavior change or a compatibility change, CHOOSE THE AFFECTED RELEASE BRANCH(ES) AND MASTER.

For details, see tips for choosing the affected versions (in Chinese).

  • master (the latest development version)
  • v9.0 (TiDB 9.0 versions)
  • v8.5 (TiDB 8.5 versions)
  • v8.4 (TiDB 8.4 versions)
  • v8.3 (TiDB 8.3 versions)
  • v8.1 (TiDB 8.1 versions)
  • v7.5 (TiDB 7.5 versions)
  • v7.1 (TiDB 7.1 versions)

Do your changes match any of the following descriptions?

  • Delete files
  • Change aliases
  • Need modification after applied to another branch
  • Might cause conflicts after applied to another branch

Summary of Changes

Hello @ti-chi-bot, I'm Gemini Code Assist1! I'm currently reviewing this pull request and will post my feedback shortly. In the meantime, here's a summary to help you and other reviewers quickly get up to speed!

This pull request updates the pd-control.md documentation to incorporate a crucial warning regarding the pd-ctl member delete command. The primary goal is to guide users away from using this command inappropriately in production, thereby preventing potential cluster instability or data loss, and instead directing them to the correct and safe procedures for scaling in PD nodes.

Highlights

  • Documentation Update: I've added a critical warning note to the pd-control.md documentation, specifically for the member delete command.
  • Critical Usage Guidance: The new note explicitly advises users not to use the pd-ctl member delete command in production environments due to potential risks.
  • Safe Procedure References: I've included direct links within the warning to the recommended documentation for safely scaling in TiDB/PD/TiKV clusters using tiup and for manually scaling TiDB on Kubernetes.

Code Review

This pull request adds an important warning note to the pd-ctl documentation, advising against using member delete in production and providing links to the correct scaling procedures. My review focuses on improving the clarity and consistency of the new text to ensure it's easily understood by users, in line with the documentation style guide.

To remove a PD node, see [Scale in a TiDB/PD/TiKV cluster](/scale-tidb-using-tiup.md#scale-in-a-tidbpdtikv-cluster) and [Manually Scale TiDB on Kubernetes](https://docs.pingcap.com/tidb-in-kubernetes/stable/scale-a-tidb-cluster/).

For better clarity and consistency, I suggest rephrasing the link text for the Kubernetes documentation.

  • The term "Manually" can be ambiguous in the context of Kubernetes, where scaling is typically managed declaratively via TiDB Operator. Removing it avoids potential confusion.
  • Using "Scale a TiDB cluster on Kubernetes" makes the link text style more consistent with the preceding link ("Scale in a TiDB/PD/TiKV cluster").
  • This also aligns with the style guide's preference for sentence case in titles and headings.1

This change improves readability and ensures the instructions are as clear as possible for users.2

Footnotes

  1. The style guide recommends using sentence case for headings. Applying this principle to link text that acts as a title for the linked document improves consistency. (link)

  2. The style guide prioritizes clarity and suggests rewording anything that might confuse a new user. (link)
