Per your request this is the initial work on libpng 1.8; this just merges the current PRs which I know to be correct and required.
See individual commits for the PR numbers. I'll try to maintain the list here:
Fixes: #560, #575, #576, #579
Removes spurious makefiles, makes the supported makefiles more generic.
Remove contrib code that is obsolete, non-functional or counter productive. The latter means code that was necessary once but is no longer so.
That's the easy stuff.
The rest of it requires work so I'll wait until you create the branch.
In fact this should be done by taking the PRs directly.
