Feature

There are various improvements/fixes that were made to the common/lib/render and common/lib/render_control code. This PR is to merge those improvements/fixes into develop or some other branch.

Feature

This will be part of a series of PRs to get the code that I've been working on checked in so that Randy or Braden can take over the spot analysis work.
