Northern Saami Emacs input method

This is an Emacs input method for Northern Saami, mimicking the regular GNU/Linux keyboard layout for Northern Saami. The reason to use an emacs-internal input method instead of your operating system’s layout switcher, is that shortcuts such as C-x C-x and M-w will still work, even though typing the x and w keys will insert č and š, respectively.

So far only tested with a Norwegian physical keyboard and Norwegian GNU/Linux keyboard layout.

If you have a suggestion for mappings that work on other keyboard layouts, please open an issue.

Note: Emacs 27.1 now includes a (different) Northern Saami input method. The layout in this repo (northern-saami) follows closely what you get by simply switching your regular keyboard layout to Saami. The layout included with Emacs (northern-sami-prefix) uses prefixes for the “special” letters (e.g. /n gives you ŋ) and is probably better if you normally use a non-Norwegian keyboard layout, or want to still be able to type w :-)

Usage

Put the following in your ~/.emacs.d/init.el:

and do C-\, selecting northern-saami. The next time you do C-\, it’ll just toggle the input method on and off. If you want to select another input method later (or if you didn’t get a chance to select one in the first place), do C-u C-\.
