The goals for launching the Open Data Portal include:

• compliance with VTA's Open Data Policy AS-IT-PL-5240
• the desire to publish 5 ★ Open Data
• avoiding closed sourced platforms and vendor lock-in with SaaS solutions
• producing re-usable code and documentation. This is to allow for easy reuse or redeployment, with low technical and financial cost of entry.
• compliance with federal regulations such as:
  • Section 508
  • Website Accessibility Under Title II of the ADA
• developing and maintaining tools to help with automation of uploading and updating data
  • CKAN Uploader
